Rizzo III, Frank Joseph, February 12, 2021, of Melville, NY. Beloved husband of Patsy. Loving father of Frank (Carol), Ron (Karen), Cindy (Tom), Diognardi, and Lori (Kitty). The cherished grandaddy of Frankie, Ryan (Jenna), Lyndsey (Michael), Jillian (Alain), Raymond, Rick, Thomas, Jenna, and Anna. Caring great-grandaddy of Avery, Camilla, Reese, Riley, Nicholas, Cruz and James. Dear brother of Raymond Rizzo (Santa), Joyce Parent (Peter), and brother-in-law of Jerry Peery (Valerie) and Ann Sarten (Carl). Frank was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Patsy; his precious grandson, Frank J Rizzo V; his loving parents, Frank and Edith; and brother Raymond.
Frank met Patsy at Murray State University in Kentucky. He was so smitten he playfully "stole" her earmuffs to ensure he'd see her again. Their love story blossomed, and they married in 1954. Their early marriage included when Frank was in the Army for two years, stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. Frank made a heartfelt promise to his father-in-law: he would always bring Patsy back to the family farm every summer to visit. This promise became a cherished family tradition, adding their four children to the car along the way, which he faithfully kept for 62 years until his wife's passing in 2016.
Growing up in Elmont, NY, Frank graduated from Sewanhaka High School and Hofstra University with a BBA and an MBA in accounting. He worked most of his career for Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage, NY (where he raised his family) starting in 1963 as a cost analyst. A highlight of his career was becoming a financial manager for the lunar module subcontract in 1966. Two years later, he became the accounting manager for the entire lunar module program. He held many positions, including manager of corporate financial projects. In 1980, he relocated to Saint Augustine, Florida, to head up accounting and financial activities for a new plant. In 1985, he became the controller of Grumman Allied Industries back in New York. During that time, Frank's involvement was pivotal when the US post office awarded Grumman Allied the mail trucks contract, the company's largest government contract in its entire storied history,, and many of those vehicles are still in service today. When he retired, he was vice president of contracts at Grumman Allied. He then volunteered with the Grumman retiree club as the treasurer until his passing. He loved to tell stories of his days at Grumman, especially the Apollo program and Allied events.
Above all else, he adored his family. Calls and visits from his adult children were frequent and always welcome. The door was always open, greeted with a smile and an enthusiastic hug. He and Pat were the family's heart, and the family meant everything to them, frequently bringing everyone together for joyful gatherings in their home where the table was crowded, the food was plentiful, and the talking and laughter were lively. Frank took immense pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, showering them with love, generosity and support. He was always ready to lend a hand to fix something around the house, offer sage advice, or celebrate their successes with genuine enthusiasm. A lifelong sports fan, Frank was a dedicated fan of the NY Jets, NY Mets (originally Brooklyn Dodgers!), the NY Islanders, and the NY Knicks, even when they lost!
Frank's love for learning was boundless, particularly his passion for history, which led him to visit Normandy, France with his sons and grandsons in 2013. Remarkably, he had only three states and two presidential libraries left to reach his goal to see them all. Known for his engaging conversations, he approached everyone he met with genuine interest, leaving them feeling valued and appreciated. Frank was generous in every respect of the word, especially with his time and wisdom. Many considered him a trusted advisor and frequently sought his counsel on taxes, legal issues, finances, real estate, and investments. For many years, he generously offered his expertise to family, friends, neighbors, and others, preparing their annual tax returns free of charge. Even as a young man growing up, he was a support to his family, whether teaching his father to drive or being a role model to his brother, sister, and many cousins.
Frank put his financial skills to good use in retirement, volunteering as treasurer for the Italian American club and president of the homeowners association in their community. He and Pat immersed themselves in the club's social life, enjoying many events, highlighted by a trip to Sicily. These shared experiences fostered deep friendships that enriched their lives.
Frank J. Rizzo's life was a tapestry woven with dedication, connection, and a profound love for others. He was a real gentleman, sincere, bright, and genuine; Frank's legacy of love, kindness, generosity, and wisdom will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
