February 6, 1948 – December 3, 2024
Roger Dale Dempsey, 76, of Decatur, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on February 6, 1948, in Decatur to James and Margie Dempsey, Roger’s life was defined by hard work, service to his family, and a deep love of sports. He began his career in 1969 as a journeyman pipefitter with United Association Local 760. Roger joined General Motors, Saginaw Steering Gear in 1985 and retired after 23 years of service.
Roger was actively involved in his children’s youth sports, coaching, traveling to countless camps, and never missing a practice or game despite working long hours. His love and dedication carried over to his grandchildren, as he remained a steadfast supporter of their activities. Roger’s happiest moments were spent with family on summer beach trips, at NASCAR races, cheering for Alabama football, and enjoying countless hours around the pool with loved ones.
Roger was a devoted husband to his late wife of 45 years, Joan, whom he cared for selflessly during her 15-year battle with ALS. He is survived by his son, Rod Dempsey (Catherine) of Birmingham; two daughters, Kristie Royer (David) of Decatur and Nikki Sprader (Michael) of Mooresville; one brother, Jerry Don Dempsey (Rena); and five cherished grandchildren, Hanna Royer, Hunter Royer, Chandler Sprader, Jack Dempsey, and Cooper Dempsey. He was also preceded in death by his parents.
