I met Susan and Dale at an annual Beaver Island South End Party in the 1990’s. Susan stayed engaged in her friendships, many of which spanned decades like ours did. I have so many memories but one stands out and typifies Susan’s kindness. In July 2006, I received the phone call no parent wants.  My 17 year old son was in a near fatal automobile accident in West Virginia. I let Susan know I would be leaving as soon as I could get a ferry off. When I got to the boat dock, Susan and Dale were there!  Susan did not want me to be alone for the 2 hour wait. Susan and Dale were a great comfort. They cared and it showed. I dearly miss my friend and always will.  Audene Taylor 

We were lucky to have had Susan and Dale as neighbors on Beaver Island.  Always welcoming, Susan loved to entertain and cook for friends and family—-truly the hostess with the mostest!
     Susan loved to travel. We have fond memories of our trip together to Sedona that Susan planned to the smallest detail.  A faithful friend , her kindness and good cheer were always evident. 
     She will be missed by all who knew her. May her memory be a blessing.

Mrs. Herman was a wonderful teacher for me in AP English. I remember her clearly and very fondly. I recall exactly what her laugh sounded like and how great it felt when she was pleased with my work. I'm now an English professor who regularly assigns my students 600-odd-page Victorian novels. I wish I could ask Mrs Herman how she taught us *Les Misérables,* which is considerably longer and more complex. I miss her.

I worked with Susan for many years at Beavercreek High School where we served concurrently on the National Honor Selection Committee. She was a most capable person of integrity. Always dedicated to the best for her students who included both of my daughters. I am very appreciative.


Like many, I had Mrs. Herman for AP English. She encouraged me as a writer, and gave kind suggestions and guidance which I took to heart. It's one thing to teach someone, it's another to create an environment where people can learn. Thanks.

I’m so very sorry to hear of the loss of Mrs. Herman. Her AP English class was one of my favorites, in large part due to the immense joy and passion she clearly had for the class. I hope there can be some comfort in the knowledge that her memory will live on through the many students she encouraged.

Dear Ann and Family,
I was so sad when I read about your Mom's passing in the Sunday's obituary yesterday.  I have her to thank for my writing style and skills which have served me well through the years.  She was a tough, but a fair teacher.  She never wanted us to use the words "is" and "was" and write in the active voice.  I think of her many times to this day while writing and think "Mrs Herman wouldn't like the way I wrote that." I can't think of another high school teacher that had that much influence on me.  She also met with my son Austin to give him some advice on taking his college SAT and ACT tests. Your Mom taught me and so many students crucial English skills that tremendously impacted our lives.  

On a side note, we miss you on the tennis courts.   Please let me know when your Mom's services will be.  I'd love to attend.

Our favorite memories of Susan will always include her as a gracious hostess at her and Dale's place overlooking the bay at Beaver Island; 

~the pleasure of our phone chats catching up on a variety of topics, with her sharp and active mind;

~her extensive, professional teaching legacy touching so many lives over the years;

~and as someone who dearly loved and cared for her family.

I worked with Susan at Beavercreek High School co-advising the Academic Team. We won the state championship. She was a kind, brilliant Renaissance woman and she will be missed.


My very first year of teaching was at Beavercreek HS and, as we didn’t have enough class rooms, actually in her space.  She was generous and kind when I needed it the most.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mrs. Herman's passing. I had her for AP English back in '93-'94 and went on to a career as a journalist and communications professional. I use the writing skills I learned in her class every day, and they formed the foundation for a career of storytelling. My condolences to her family. I'm profoundly grateful for having her as a teacher.  (And yes, I did marry fellow AP English classmate Phil Neal. )
