Miles, Richard (Dick), 87 of Kettering, passed away January 15, 2017. He was born Feb. 1, 1929 in New Castle, Indiana, the son of Leo and Iva Miles. Richard was preceded in death by his son Robert Miles. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Joyce. They were happily married for 65 years. Also surviving are Stephen and Valerie Miles, Lauren and Melinde Miles; David and Mary Miles, Julie Miles and Katie Miles McCartney (Kyle McCartney); Linda Miles, Betsy Miles and Amy Miles Sheehan (Tim Sheehan); Elizabeth and Donald Specht, Jennifer Specht Brandon (Tim Brandon), Laura Specht Helsby (Ben Helsby), Rachel Specht; James C. Miles, Kerri Miles, Justin Miles, Daniel and Jordan Miles, great granddaughter Drew Miles. Richard attended DePaul University and graduated from Indiana University with A.B. and A.M. degrees. He was a member of Sigma Nu social fraternity and Sigma Delta Chi, national journalistic fraternity. His first professional position was Night Editor of the Logansport, Indiana Pharos-Tribune. For 13 years he was publisher and editor of weekly newspapers in New Castle and Centerville, Indiana. After moving with his family to Kettering, Ohio in 1966, he was communications manager for McCall Corp. He then enjoyed 25 years of successful service with NCR Corporation where he was a director in Human Resources at the World Headquarters. He retired in 1993. Richard was a life-long Christian and member of Central Christian Church in Kettering. He was a master Mason in Hiram Lodge #417 and a 32 degree Mason in the Scottish Rite in Indianapolis, Indiana. Following retirement, Richard was a court runner for his two attorney sons. He was a volunteer with the city of Kettering, serving as a courier for the Fire Department and also as an usher at the Fraze. Richard was a member and secretary of the Dayton Salvation Army Advisory Board for over 40 years; he was a member of the Dayton Urban League board and served as a volunteer with the United Way, Explorer Scouts, Goodwill and Junior Achievement. He enjoyed the friendship of many people. Richard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and was most proud of the life accomplishments of his wife, children and grandchildren in their career and personal activities. The family of Richard Miles would like to thank Dr. Stephen Schaerer, Laurelwood Senior Living and Hospice of Dayton for their exemplary care and compassion. Funeral Services will be held at Tobias Funeral Home, 5471 Far Hills Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45429 on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 6PM with Dr. Robert H. Wade officiating.
