PHILLIPS, Muriel, age 104, died Monday, June 20, 2011 at Brighton Gardens. Born on July 8, 1906, she lived most of her life in the Alliance, Ohio area. She was a strict and respected teacher, beginning her career in a two-room schoolhouse at age 19. She was an expert seamstress, speller and grammarian. She loved to knit and crochet for charity; even in her 96th year she made dozens of baby caps and 48 pairs of mittens for the needy. She was active in the Alliance First Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon, circle leader, Sunday school superintendent and wedding hostess. She was currently a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Miami Township, Ohio. Survivors are her daughter, Mary Arnett of Dayton; grandsons, Scott (Teri) Hupp of Liberty Township and Greg (Kathy) Hupp of Milford; and five great-grandchildren, Avery, Hannah, Sydney, Hailey and Colton, all of whom she claimed as cute and smart. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2011 at Central Presbyterian Church, 4699 Lamme Road, Dayton, Ohio 45439, with a memorial service to begin at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Dr. David Jackson will officiate. Music will begin at 10:40 a.m. At the convenience of the family, burial of cremains will be in Marlboro Cemetery, Alliance, Ohio.
