BECHTEL, Charles Louis age 83 passed away Monday, June 7, 2021 at Harbor Chase of Beavercreek. Charles was one of twelve children and was born on February 8, 1938 to parents Carl F. and Bernice M. Bechtel who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his siblings Herbert Bechtel, Carol (Bechtel) Jarnigan and Donald Bechtel.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years Miriam (Mimi) Bechtel; sons Nicholas Bechtel (Beavercreek, OH) and Kevin “Casey” (Mary) Bechtel (Beavercreek, OH); daughters Kim (Doug) Adamson (Walland, TN) and Nanette (David) Moon (Tomassee, SC). Grandchildren Kristie (Matt) Passage (Beavercreek, OH), Kevin (Conor) Bechtel (Santa Barbara, CA), Kara (Jonathan) Greer (Phoenix, AZ), Kelsey (Tim) Twehues (Nicholasville, KY), Cameron (Melissa) Bechtel (Columbus, OH), Ashley (Jay) Michaels (Clyde, OH), Clarissa (Brad) Hargrove (Pickerington, OH), Natasha (Luke) Orgass (Columbus, IN), Serena Farina (Orlando, FL), Dante Sciallis (Naples, FL), Amanda (BJ) Callahan (Westminster, SC) and Kate Moon (Charleston, SC), and 22 beautiful and precious great grandchildren.
Charles is also survived by his siblings; Ben Bechtel of Conrath, Wisconsin; Tom (Becky) Bechtel of Kenton, Ohio, David (Susan) Bechtel of Bellefontaine, Ohio, Therese (Keith) Calland of Degraff, Ohio, Jody (Ray) Praeter of Bellefontaine, Ohio, Gina (Dan) Huffman of Piqua, Ohio, Rick (Bernadette) Bechtel of Dallas, Texas, and Randy (Penny) Bechtel of Bellefontaine, Ohio.
Chuck was a graduate of Beavercreek High School, Class of 1956. His vocation was as a contractor in the commercial roofing and sheet metal business. He began work at Harold J. Becker Company as journeyman roofer after high school. He attended The University of Dayton and in 1970, he assumed control of Harold J. Becker Company as President. During his tenure and through his efforts, HJB Co. became a complete Section 7 moisture protection contractor with expertise in roofing, sheet metal, caulking and masonry restoration. He is a former President and charter member of the Miami Valley Roofing and Sheet Metal Association. Chuck was elected National Roofing Contractors Association President in 1994. He served on many roofing and waterproofing committees as well as serving as an educational speaker for NRCA. He traveled internationally representing the association for many years thereafter. Chuck was presented the industry’s most prestigious award – the J.A. Piper Award in 2005.
Chuck graciously served as a Guardian Ad Litem for the Greene County court system and served on the board of the Greene County Foundation.
Chuck was an avid golfer, fisherman, boater and turkey hunter. He was a member of Beavercreek Rotary and a Symposiarch. His family and friends will remember him for his sense of humor, his love of travel and storytelling skills. He loved and was loved by his family and friends. They ask in lieu of flowers that donations in his memory be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (michaeljfox.org).
A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 22 at 11:00 AM at St. Brigid Catholic Church, 312 Fairground Road, Xenia, Ohio 45385. Family will be available to greet friends and family prior to service from 10:00-11:00AM. A luncheon will follow Mass at Gilbert’s Barn Venue, 2146 Trebein Rd, Xenia, OH 45385 for family and friends.
