Shirley Maxine Carley Holden, 85, of Davenport died Sunday, August 15, 2010 at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Visitation will be two hours prior to the services at the mortuary. Burial will be at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Scott County Humane Society and the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, Chicago.

Shirley was born on October 17, 1924 in Des Moines, IA to Douglas and Lillian Carley. She married Robert (Bob) Holden on February 13, 1944 in Indianapolis. They had one son, David Holden. Shirley was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church and involved in many charitable organizations including Daughters of the Nile; Marie Jensen Kings Daughters and Sons; Eastern Star; Women of the Moose, Genesis Hospital Auxiliary and the American Business Women’s Association.
In retirement, Bob and Shirley lived adventurously. They loved to “winter” together in San Diego, CA, travel abroad to many places including Africa, Germany, and China and spend time with their family and friends. Shirley especially enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren. She always had special trinkets to give and a hug to offer.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughter-in-law, Dr. Debra Jaegle, Davenport; grandchildren, Brian (Lisa) Nelson, Chad (Heather) Nelson, Jeff Nelson, Sarah (Paul) Markham, Brock (Jana) Motley; 11 great grandchildren and 20 nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Jack Chaffee, Nisswa, MN; and a special four-legged friend, Brandy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; son, David; and sister-in-law, Libbie Chaffee.
