Roberta graduated from West Texas State University and taught elementary school grades for many years before receiving her master’s degree in administration from the University of Illinois. She became an advocate for educators belonging to the National Education Association and was instrumental in transforming the NEA from an administration led to a teacher led organization.
While an undergraduate, Roberta met the love of her life, Don Hickman, on an activity bus returning from a sporting event where she had played in the band, and he had been a cheerleader. The pair spent nearly 73 years together as a married couple and enjoyed teaching round dancing (routine choreographed ballroom dancing) on a national level. They also served together many years ushering their beloved San Antonio Spurs, several NCAA final four events for both men and women, numerous concerts, and the annual rodeo.
Roberta was well known for her love of crafting- creating jewelry and clothing drenched in “bling”. She was a collector of many figurines, nutcrackers, and an extensive earring collection. Many were touched by her loving generosity and hospitality.
Lovingly remembering Roberta are husband, Don, daughters Jo Beth Kested (Rusty), San Antonio, Texas, and Kathy Weigle (B. J.), Bettendorf, Iowa, along with (6) grandchildren and (13) great grandchildren. Family remembrances will be held in San Antonio and Bettendorf at a later date. She will ultimately be laid to rest in Canyon, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or your local food bank.
