Richard L. Payne, Sr., 88, of LeClaire, Iowa passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport. Funeral service to honor his memory will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at 11:30 am at Weerts Funeral Home; visitation will be before the service starting at 10:00 am. Richard will be laid to rest at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery following the funeral. Memorials in Richard’s name may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
Richard was born on February 20, 1936 in Wynn, Arkansas to Abraham and Magnolia Payne. He worked as an Iron Pourer at the John Deere Foundry for 35 years before he retired. Richard was united in marriage to Verna Watkins on September 19, 1955; she passed away in 2008. He enjoyed spending time in the great outdoors; hunting, fishing, and working in his garden. Richard also enjoyed grilling wonderful food for his beloved family and friends. He was a member at Progressive Baptist Church and a 33rd degree Master Mason Scottish Rite.
Those left to honor his memory are his children Nathan (Heidi Curths) Payne, Jerry Payne, Rebecca (Dean) Jantzen; daughters-in-law Janice Payne and Connie Payne; 14 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and his brother Elmer Payne.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Verna; two sons Nathaniel and Richard, Jr.; daughters Julie and Vernastine; his parents; his siblings Postell Payne, Maggie Swearingum, Estell Payne, Marcella Payne, John Payne, and Abraham Payne, Jr.; and grandson Ferguson Payne.
