Richard (Dick) was born February 11, 1944 in Davenport, Iowa to Robert and Jean (Anderson) Houston. He married the love of his life, Ellen McKinney, in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO February 18, 1967. Dick served in the Army from 1966-1970. He had been employed as a tool and die maker at the Rock Island Arsenal prior to his retirement in 1997.
Dick was a Harley Davidson enthusiast and upon returning from Vietnam, he and Ellen opened Cycle Sport, a popular custom Harley Davidson shop where he and his friends created show bikes. He enjoyed taking road trips on his Harley, driving to Florida, California, and all parts in-between. After closing the shop in the 80s, Dick became a NASCAR and World of Outlaws enthusiast, reviving his love for auto racing that he had in his youth.
Fond memories shared by his children include his love and appreciation for music, family weekends spent camping where Dick taught the kids how to ride motorcycles, and Dick’s penchant for a strong vocabulary through which he challenged the kids to look up words in the dictionary.
He was a loving and gentle man with a smile that radiated from his eyes – he will be missed by those who love him.
Dick is survived by his wife, Ellen Houston, Davenport, daughters Lisa (Tim) Fahrenkrog (Davenport) and Gina (Matt) Setzler (San Diego, CA); brother James (Mary) Houston (Des Moines); grandchildren Josh (CeCe) Kroeger (Murfreesboro, TN), Jenni (Steve) Ingleby (Riverdale), Brian (Kim) Spurgeon (Pittsburgh, PA), Nick Seneca (San Diego, CA), Amanda Spurgeon (husband Alex Burkamper) (Rock Island, IL), Juliana Lane (San Diego, CA) and Kyle Houston (Davenport); and six great-grandchildren.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, and his son, Richard G. Houston, Jr.
