Phillip DeWain (Bud) Atwell has passed on to eternal life leaving a family who will miss him greatly – never forgetting his strength, wisdom and, of course, his one-of-a-kind wit. Per his wishes cremation rites will be accorded. Services will be held at a later date. Online condolences and tributes may be made at www.rungemortuary.com.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patti (Shankle) whom he married in Davenport on February 25, 1956 at St. John’s Methodist Church; his five children, David (Suzy), Beverly (Richard), Dr. Sandra Atwell-Laz (Dr. Michael Laz), Cheryl (Edward) and Michael (Sally); grandchildren, Jamie Jo Meek, Eddie Cawley, Nicklaus Atwell and Matthew Atwell; great grandchildren, Amanda, Alyssa and Isabella; and beloved friend, brother-in-law, Travis (Vi) Shankle.
Bud was born April 28, 1935, the son of Belton and Catherine (Swinson) Atwell. After graduating from high school, he served his country by joining the Army and went on to attend Mississippi State and Augustana College. Bud served a four year sheet metal apprenticeship through Local # 91, which he was a member (Brother) of for 50 years. Bud worked for several local companies until starting his own company, Rock Island Sheet Metal.
Bud and Patti retired to Florala, AL, in 1986 where they enjoyed many relaxing activities. They transferred to the First Lutheran Church where the members became a blessing of family and friendship. Bud’s green thumb and talent of design made the yard a place of serenity and beauty. Everywhere one would look there was beauty. He enjoyed fishing and many, many hours with his pole in the lake and not once having to bait anyone’s pole but his own.
When a wise man dies so much history is lost, Bud has taken so much with him but has left so much behind – so many memories, sayings and observations that we call upon and cherish. Until we meet again our love is with you always.
Bud’s family would like to express their deep appreciation to our dear Hospice Compassus nurses-Mike, Lisa, Debbie, Bonnie, Brenda and Sue.
