Max was born in Jackson County on June 24, 1935, to Henry and Myra (Reed) Schurbon. He graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1953 and enlisted in the US Army in 1954, proudly serving his country during the Korean War. In 2013, Max joined fellow veterans on the Quad Cities Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., accompanied by his guardian and son-in-law, Bill.
