Mary Alice Joyner, 84, of Bettendorf, IA passed away Saturday, April 15, 2023 at her home surrounded by her beloved family. Funeral service to honor her memory will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 11am at Mt. Olive COGIC in Davenport. Visitation will be on Friday, April 21, 2023 from 4-7pm at Weerts Funeral Home. Private burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials in Mary’s name may be made to Mt. Moriah Jehovah-Jireh COGIC.
Mary was born on March 5, 1939 to Levi and Thedora O’neal in Mayflower, Arkansas. Following high school, Mary earned her associates degree from Scott Community College and worked as an LPN at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL, the Iowa Masonic and the Kahl Home in Davenport, Iowa for many years. Mary worked as a supervisor at Brach's Candy Company in Davenport, Iowa and retired after 13 years. Throughout her retired life, Mary was the neighborhood babysitter, better known as "Grandma Mary".
She was united in marriage to Charles Hugh Joyner, Sr. on August 21, 1965 in Davenport, Iowa. Mary was the director of five choirs at Faith Temple COGIC in New Rochelle, NY and in many various departments of the church. Mary was an active member and the Mother of Mt. Moriah Jehovah-Jireh COGIC. Mary loved to travel to COGIC conventions and often took cruises with her family. She was well known for her flower arrangements, cooking exceptional meals for her friends and family, sewing various projects, and her love of shopping. Mary could often be found watching her favorite Country Western movies and TV shows, along with old game shows. She often took in those in need from the community and provided them with food, love, and a place to stay.
Those left to honor her memory are her children Paula Joyner-Taylor, Eva Renee Joyner-Mack, Charles (Tracy) Joyner, Jr., and Corey Joyner; grandchildren Whitney, Alexia, Samuel Jr., Cordré, Samauria, Emmanuel, Mya, Kai, Avantae, Saniya, Brandon, Bryan, and Kiara; great-grandchildren: Cynne, Cortez, A'riyah, Kingsley, Whitney Jr., E'mias, Andreas, Hezekiah, Jovan, and Kemyha; her Aunt Viola South; and cousin Juanita Webb-Glaser.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles; her parents, daughter Andrea Annette Joyner, a grandson, her brother Levi Jr., and her stepmother Frances O’neal.
