Lance was born on December 12, 1946 in Davenport, Iowa to Norman and Zoe Frye. He graduated from North Scott High School and attended Northeast Missouri State. Lance was united in marriage to Cheryle Stater on July 25, 1987. In 1967 Lance and his father started Seven Cities Sod; he went on to run the business with his brother-in-law Jack Armstrong and later with his son Keaton. He was very involved with the community, serving on the North Scott Athletic Boosters as president for one term; the North Scott I-Club, and the Iowa TurfGrass Institute as Co-President. When he was younger, Lance had his pilot’s license and would fly Hayden Fry, Carl Jackson, and Barry Alvarez for various recruiting trips for the University of Iowa. He provided the sod for the “Field of Dreams” movie, was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, and was awarded Fan of the Year award for the Iowa High School Boys Basketball Tournament in 2018. Lance loved his family dearly and looked forward to family vacations and get-togethers, no matter how crazy and insane they were.
