John Richard Kroeger, 84, of Davenport passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 at Manor Care, Utica Ridge. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Monday, February 13 ,2017 at ST. Mark Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 4-7 PM on Sunday at The Runge Mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to his church. John was born December 20, 1932 in Davenport the son of Herman and Elizabeth (Cole) Kroeger. He was united in marriage to Shirley A. Staples on December 18, 1952 in Maquoketa, IA. John served proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from UPS after many years of service. He was a member of ST. Mark Lutheran Church where he volunteered and maintained Camp Oakwood.
John enjoyed building and flying model airplanes and was a longtime member of the Davenport Model Airplane Club. John coached Little league, Pony league, and Dad’s Club softball as well as playing baseball himself for over 30 yrs.. He loved NASCAR, stock car racing and his own cars and trucks along with being an avid bowler and golfer. Additionally John was a dedicated Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan, that immensely enjoyed camping with his wife, friends, and family.
Most of all he was a devoted father and grandfather.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 64 years, Shirley; daughters: Linda (Brian) Ray, Teresa(Cal) Johnson, Kathleen (Jeffery) Zelnio, Julie (Cliff) Ginn, and son, John (Janice Cook) Kroeger; 12 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and one on the way ;1 great great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Wayne Kroeger and sister Betty Oeter.
