Greta Foreman, age 86 of Davenport, Iowa died Tues, March 19th of 2013 at Genesis East. Celebration of Life services will be held on March 23rd, Saturday at 10 am, at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 14th and Brady St., Davenport with lunch to follow. Visitation will be held from 4 pm to 7 pm on Friday, March 22nd at Runge on Kimberly Rd. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church, of which she was a member.
Mrs. Greta Foreman was born in 1926 in Sioux County, Iowa to Andrew and Gertrude Vander Maten. She married Donald G. Foreman on June 17, 1947 in Middleburg, Iowa as they celebrated 65 years this past summer. She devoted her career to education, retiring in 1989 after 34 years. Her first 12 years were served in west and northwest Iowa. She and her husband moved to Davenport in 1956 where their three children: Karla, Brad and Pam were born in the 60's. In the meantime she earned her B.A. from Augustana and her M.A. from the University of Iowa. In the 1970s she resumed teaching as a Resource Teacher at Jefferson Elementary until retirement. She served on a pilot program for the State of Iowa for Special Education, “SPURT” (Special Program Utilizing Resource Teachers), from 1973-1975. In addition to her church membership, she was earlier a choir member, Sunday School teacher, counselor, and was a member of the church’s 49ers Sunday school class. She was a former member of PEO, ISEA, NEA, and Davenport Area Retired Teachers Assn. She also enjoyed travel, music, antiques, her grandchildren and collectibles.
Survivors include her husband, Donald; daughters: Karla (Bill) Sandry of Bettendorf, and Pam (John) Simonovich of Bloomington, Illinois; son: Brad Foreman of Davenport; 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; sisters: Alice Van Dyke of Hospers, Iowa, Joan Schouten of Sioux Center, Iowa, Edna Kiel of Fullerton, CA, and Adeline Dolphin of Hospers, Iowa; brother, Willis Vander Maten of Grand Island, Florida.
