Doris was born on April 30, 1952 in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Frances (Cerveny) Pilgrim. Doris was a 1970 graduate of Pleasant Valley High School and a graduate of St. Ambrose University in 1991.
Doris worked at the Rock Island Arsenal in civilian service as a logistics management specialist. She was highly dedicated to her career, always keeping in mind the soldiers and the country she served. She loved the travel it brought to Korea, Europe, The Pentagon, and other US Military bases.
In 1991, she received acknowledgment for outstanding contributions to preserving peace in Operation Desert Storm. She also was presented the Achievement Medal for Civilian Service in 2002. In 2008, she was presented the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service, recognizing her 30 year career.
In her younger years, she enjoyed horseback riding, competing in contest events, especially the barrel race. Later, she enjoyed trail riding. Her artistic talents revealed a love of nature, painting beautiful scenes in watercolor. She enjoyed the outdoors, flowers, birds, and the company of her latest dog, CoCo, whom she took on many walks to Crow Creek and Duck Creek Parks. Doris’ silly sense of humor brought joy and laughter to those around her. She loved her family and she touched all who knew her with a generous and giving heart.
Doris is survived by her son, Samuel Starr of Buena Vista, CO; grandchildren, Sammy, Levi, and Emily Starr; sisters, Martha (Parry) Plisek and Patricia (Jim Schmidt) Ream; nephew, Daron Shirey; nieces, Kerre Marchant, Mande Dalupan, and Andrea (Jesse) Estell, and many great-nieces, great-nephews, and one great-grandniece.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
