Carolyn Draper- Math

Carolyn S. Draper-Math, 75, of Davenport, IA, lovingly referred to as Mom, Grandma, Sister, Aunt and Friend passed away Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. Per her wishes, her body was donated to the University of Iowa for research.

Carolyn was born June 16, 1946, to Elwin and Margaret (Jones) Draper in Gary, IN. She graduated from Horace Mann High School in Gary. Following high school, Carolyn attended college abroad at Université de Strasbourg in France and graduated from MacMurray College in Jacksonville, IN. She completed her studies by receiving her M.A. from Western Illinois University and her M.A. + 30 from Drake University. During her time as a teacher of French and Global Studies at J. B. Young Junior High School in Davenport, she proved herself as an exceptional educator – one who exhibited great intellect, dedication, and humor. Her love of history was noteworthy beyond description. She and her sister treasured creating life-lesson Cousin Camps for her grandchildren and loved family gatherings. Carolyn was a member of P.E.O Chapter JS, Rock Island Arsenal Historical Society, Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities, DARSPA and ISEA.

Carolyn will be missed by her children; Scott (Cheryl) Math of Des Moines, IA, and Laurie Noel (Steve) Gust of Ankeny, IA; grandchildren: Kaitlin Elizabeth (Derek) Wood, Rachel Anne Math, Colin John Scott Riggs, and Carson Draper Riggs; and a sister, Dr. Margaret Elizabeth (Peggy) Draper Moore. Her devoted friend, Stuart K Waxenberg of 27 years and her great friend, Sue Morton, also survive her. Additional survivors are Ed (Nancy) Math and nephews Andrew and Nicholas Math. Her parents preceded her in death.

Carolyn’s wish was to give a heartfelt thank you to the medical staff that has helped her over the years. These professionals include Dr. David Staub of Rheumatology Associates and his staff, Dr. David Bender of the University of Iowa, Dr. Michael Porubcin of the Genesis Cancer Center, and the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Carolyn will be sorely missed by so many; her impact will be long remembered and cherished. Her legacy will be far-reaching.
