November 22nd 2024. He died at home with family after a year-long fight with
lung cancer.
Born in Merrill, IA in 1933, he went to Morningside College and graduated from
William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul in 1958. He was a defense attorney
and practiced law in Duluth defending several high profile criminal trials. He
finished his career at MN Lake County Attorney's office in 1996.
An outdoorsman since childhood, he enjoyed bird hunting, trapping, and
especially fishing. He went on many fishing trips to Canada, ND, Michigan,
Florida and Alaska. Deep fried and breaded with lots of tartar sauce, was his
favorite preparation method.
Bruce bought land near Two Harbors in the 1960s, and lived in a cabin until the
1990s. There he enjoyed hunting mushrooms, polishing rocks, making jewelry
and tending to his garden. He was a Master Gardener and could make any plant
flourish even in the worst of soils and climates, which won him many ribbons at
the county fair.
Bruce was an avid reader, enjoyed philosophy and listening to classical music.
He valued education and curiosity fueled his desire to continue learning until his
last days. He was known and loved for his sharp wit and practical wisdom. He
was cherished by his family and friends and could easily carry a conversation
with anyone about anything.
Survived by and will be greatly missed by his ‘lady of 33 years’, Maureen
Mahoney and his children Greg Fritsche, Dan Meyer, Julie Meyer, Tony
Lundstrom, Dave Meyer and Rachel Meyer.
There will be a memorial in Duluth, MN spring/early summer of 2025.
