Jean Lloy ( Madden ) – 90, of Dartmouth Nova Scotia, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at the Dartmouth General Hospital with her loving family at her side.
Born in the District of Springburn in the Burgh of Glasgow, Scotland, she grew up as an orphan in Buckie, Peterhead, Aberdeen, Inverness, Stonehaven and Dundee. She was the daughter of Ann Blain Mitchell/Madden. She was predeceased by her husband Eldridge Scarfe Lloy, and her sister, Margaret Clarke, whom she was blessed to discover and meet many years later after immigrating from Scotland as a young woman.
Prior to coming to Canada, she worked at the Queens Hotel in Dundee where she did everything from chamber maid to helping in the kitchen. She was an avid dancer and was on occasion known to dance on the roof of parked cars with her girlfriends. In Scotland, her and her girlfriend found out about two job offers - one in Canada and one in Australia. They flipped a coin and she got Canada. Coincidentally, she met the Mayor of Halifax who was staying at the Queens Hotel while on holiday in Scotland. This is when she was offered the job of housekeeper and Nanny to their children. The mayor subsequently introduced her to a friend’s nanny and, through her, she ended up meeting her future husband. They were married on November 30, 1957 and enjoyed 54 years of vibrant love together before his passing in 2011.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed many crafts and hobbies including sewing as a fully trained seamstress/tailor, reading, charcoal drawing, puzzles (the bigger the better), painting, beating everyone in the family at scrabble, and knitting baby outfits, finger puppets and small animals for the children’s hospital to bring smiles to their young faces.
She will be deeply missed by her loving family, children William (Deana), Frank (Karen), David (Sandy) and Heather. Her grandchildren Cassandra (Matt), Lee (Julien), Samantha (Jered), Alexander (Courtney), Michael, Jessica (Nathan), Dustin, Willem. Great grandchildren, Colton, Grace, Theodore, Wren, Evander, Reese (predeceased).
Service details are to be confirmed with A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home and Iona Presbyterian Church. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission.
