Passed away peacefully in her 91st year on Friday, December 3, 2010 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Born April 9, 1920 in Newmarket, Ontario, to the Rev. W.L.L. (Levi) and Mildred (née Scott) Lawrence, she was predeceased by her husband, W/Cdr H.A. (Harry) Forbes in 2002, her older sister Wilda Staples, and grandson Iain Forbes. She is survived by sons Donald (Linda) and Roderick (Trudie), grandsons Niall and Andrew (Laura) Forbes, granddaughter Keldi Forbes, and several nieces and nephews. Evelyn took an early interest in photography and played the violin in her teens and twenties. She was a skilled seamstress, a wonderful cook, and a lover of nature. She trained at Toronto Western Hospital with Harry’s sister Kay, subsequently obtained a certificate in Public Health at the University of Toronto, and worked in Red Cross outposts in northern Ontario during the war. She then served as a public health nurse in eastern Ontario. After their wedding in 1947, Evelyn and Harry lived for a year in England. Subsequent RCAF postings took them to Ontario, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, and London, England. While living in Manitoba, they enjoyed exploring country roads and bird-watching in Prairie sloughs as well as trips to the Rockies. During four years in London, they took full advantage of the opportunity to explore Britain and Europe. After Harry joined the Canadian International Development Agency in Ottawa, Evelyn completed a degree in Art History at Carleton University. In 1974, they moved to their beloved home overlooking the Gatineau River in Quebec, where they remained for 24 years, apart from a four-year posting with CIDA in Kingston, Jamaica. Their time in the Caribbean provided for many rich cultural and natural history experiences in Jamaica and the region, including Venezuela, Belize, Honduras, and Haiti. In 1998, Evelyn and Harry moved to a condominium with a private garden and an unobstructed view of Halifax Harbour. This view remained a source of enjoyment for Evelyn throughout her later years, when her quality of life was greatly enhanced by the kind efforts of Mary Murphy and Maureen McEachern. The care and attention of staff at the Dartmouth General Hospital in her final days is also much appreciated. A family graveside service will take place in Tatamagouche Cemetery on Saturday, December 11 at 11:00 am. If desired, donations may be made to the Red Cross or other charity of choice.
