It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved José Abrew, affectionately known as “Chickie” to his parents and siblings. José, passed on November 21, 2024, at the age of 80. A long-time resident of Bronx, NY, and later Danbury, CT, José lived a life full of love, kindness, and devotion. He was happily married to his cherished wife, Forrista “Joyce” Abrew, for over 45 wonderful years.
The two met at Pace College, where José worked as a supervising clerk. A dedicated professional, José’s diligence and warmth left a lasting impact. This can be said of his life in all aspects, as he was a man who cherished family gatherings, shared stories, and embraced life with an open heart.
José was born on September 18, 1944, in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico and raised in Spanish Harlem during the 1950s. In his youth, he embraced the culture and vibrancy of New York City, enjoying dinner, dancing, nights filled with salsa, Latin jazz, and the whimsy of American music. He shared many pastimes with his loved ones, traveling with Joyce and camping trips with his brothers in upstate New York. José will be remembered as a devoted husband, a caring father, a loyal brother, an affectionate uncle, a compassionate neighbor, and a true friend to all who knew him.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Carlos and Encarnación, his sister Ruth Esther, and his brother Luis Abreu. He is survived by his sister Martha Abreu-Gonzalez, his brother Robert Abreu (Elda), his daughter Victoria, and his beloved nieces and nephews: Yvette Morales, Isabella Oliva, Tracy Ramos (Hiram), Leslie King, Christine Abreu, Eric Abreu, Brandon Ortiz (Tiara), and Jason Abreu.
José’s legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. Friends and family are warmly invited to join us in celebrating his life and honoring the memory of a man who was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
Friends will be received from 10:00am -12:00pm on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 12:00pm on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT. Burial will follow in Wooster Cemetery, 20 Ellsworth Ave., Danbury, CT.
