John Patrick Reilly, 90, formerly of Mystic, CT passed away on January 30, 2018. John was born May 24, 1927 in Holyoke, MA to Anthony and Bridget (Meenaghan) Reilly who returned to Belmullet, County Mayo, Ireland with their young family when John was five years old. John left home to work in England initially and returned to the United States settling in New York City where he was soon drafted by the US Army during the Korean War. John married Margaret (Quirke) at St. Agnes Church in Manhattan soon after his discharge. They settled in the Bronx where they raised their family in Saint Nicholas of Tolentine Parish for over 20 years before moving to CT. He was a communicate of Saint Edward the Confessor Church in New Fairfield. They retired to Mystic, CT and were communicants of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Mystic CT they lived for several years before Margaret passed away in June of 2014.
John was the proprietor of Reilly‘s Bar and Grill in the Bronx and retired from Ethan Allen in Danbury, CT John was very proud of his heritage and a passionate supporter of Irish culture and sport especially Mayo Football. He was a staunch participant of many clubs and organizations including; the Eastside Irish American Club, the St. Lawrence Fishing Club, the Knights of Columbus, and Korean War Veterans. John was also privileged to serve as Past President of the Mayo Men’s Patriotic Benevolent Association of NYC as well as the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Danbury, CT.
He was the beloved husband for 59 years to the late Margaret ‘Peggy’ (Quirke) Reilly and is survived by their five children and families, John and Ellen (Monroe, CT), Brian and Susan (Conway, SC), Kathleen and Todd Cormier (Westport, MA), Margaret and Frank Thompson (Ledyard, CT), and Patrick and Susan (Guilford, CT). He was a loving grandfather to Colleen, Sarah, Brian, Sean, Brendan, Bridget, Connor, Erik, Caroline, Grace, Emily, William, Dena, Keri, and Jodi. John also survived by several brothers and sisters; Eileen Mescall (Yonkers, NY), Anthony and Bernadette Reilly (Bronx, NY), Shirley Murphy (Bedford, NY), Thomas and Kathleen Reilly(Cairo,NY), Margaret Gehab (Long Island, NY).He was pre-deceased by his brother Padraig Reilly, his sister Marie Pacher, as well as his brother in laws Fred Pacher, Henry Gehab and Michael John Murphy and John Mescall.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 5, 2018 at St. Peter Church, 104 Main St., Danbury. He will be buried in Ireland alongside his wife Peggy of 59 years. The family will receive family and friends from 1-4pm Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.
