Joan Henry Griswold, 78 of Newtown, formerly of Danbury, passed away peacefully at Masonicare of Newtown on Friday, August 12, 2011. Joan was born in the Bronx, NY, daughter of the late Michael and Josephine Henry. After moving to the Danbury area, she attended and graduated from Danbury High School in 1951. Joan was devoted to her family's business, the Airport Service Station, on Sugar Hollow Road-Route 7 in Danbury, which was owned and operated by her father. Mrs. Griswold worked as the office manager and bookkeeper for the business from it's opening in 1947 until it's closure in 1972. At some point after the family business closed, Joan went to work as an assembler at the Barden Corporation in Danbury, where she was employed for almost 20 years. Joan had been a longtime member of St. Peter's Church in Danbury.
She is survived by her sister Geraldine Gillen and husband William, of Southbury and her brother Edward Henry and wife Dina, of Danbury, many nieces and nephews and 27 great nieces and nephews. Aunt Joan will be especially missed by her sister Jerry's kids, Kevin Gillen, Geraldine Gillen, Maureen Gillen-Brown, Sheila Gillen Gross, Patty Gillen McQuail and Bernadette Addessi, as she had always been like a "second mom" to them.
She was predeceased by her infant daughter Kathleen Griswold, her sister Dorothy Finkle and her brother Bernard Henry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church, on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Peter Cemetery. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
