George was born in Yonkers, New York, a son of the late George Goodwin Sr, and Catherine (Stem) Goodwin. He attended Purdys Central High School in North Salem Township, New York. He played baseball and basketball for his school and after graduating, he went into the Army Reserves.
George worked in real estate and retired from Great American Insurance in 2006. An outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed taking care of his Koi pond. He created beautiful gardens with gorgeous flowers, and his garden provided tons of tomatoes and cucumbers to his friends and family.
George made a great ziti and an even better eggplant parmigiana. He was a wonderful neighbor, friend, husband, father, father-in-law, but he excelled at being a grandfather. There was nothing he loved more than watching his grandsons enjoying themselves in their activities whether it was sports or theater. You could always find George sitting behind the outfield during a baseball game or in the audience at one of local plays or musicals. He was his grandsons’ absolute biggest fan.
George had his priorities straight. He knew the importance of making small moments and how they become the memories for those left behind. He excelled at being present in the present. He taught us how to show others they are cared for, and how to tell a god-awful dad joke. He taught us patience, why never to park the wrong way on his road, and to call your mother regularly.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dianne Marie (Smith) Goodwin; his son, Richard Goodwin, daughter-in-law, Jennifer; and his two grandsons: Connor Goodwin and Jake Goodwin, all of Danbury.
Friends are invited to pay their respects from 3:00pm-5:00 on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019 at the Green Funeral Home 57 Main St., Danbury. A Prayer Service will be conducted at 5:00pm.
