Bill was born on March 13, 1943, to Alice and Loren Plummer in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and he grew up in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. His great-grandparents were among the first non-Native Americans to settle in the area, serving as the Indian Agent and schoolteacher for the Tonkawa tribe as they were relocated from Central Texas in 1891.
He graduated from Tonkawa High School in 1961, and he received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009 from the Tonkawa Alumni Association. In 1966, Bill graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business. He excelled in track and was an active member of the Flying Aggies.
Following college, Bill became the youngest innkeeper in the nation for Holiday Inns, managing inns in Wichita, Kansas, and Denton, Texas. In 1969, he joined Republic National Bank in Dallas, where he began in the bank’s Trust Department. Later, as a result of his leadership and innovation, he created a new department for the bank that would grow to become a new national industry: corporate relocation.
Bill married the love of his life, Gail, on November 3, 1984, in Breckenridge, Colorado.
In 1989, Bill and Gail co-founded AmeriCorp Relocation Management Co., the company that would become Altair Global. Today, Altair Global has offices worldwide which provide comprehensive and innovative corporate mobility services and solutions to well-known companies around the world. Bill’s philosophy, both personally and professionally, was simple. He always said that we are in this business to help people in one of the most stressful times of their lives. He said that this is not a job, it’s a calling. Helping people was his mantra.
Bill was honored to receive numerous industry awards, but his joy was giving back to the community. He dreamed of finding a way to give back to his hometown, Tonkawa, Oklahoma, and in 1997, he recognized a golden opportunity to do so. Outdated computers at AmeriCorp were being replaced and Bill donated them to the Tonkawa ISD. Additionally, he led the effort to provide the school system with internet capabilities, equipment, technical support and matching funds for local fundraising efforts. School children were connected to the world; many for the first time.
In Dallas, Bill was involved for several decades in many non-profit endeavors, as a hands-on volunteer or a board member. He was a current Board member for the Center for BrainHealth, a member of the original Board of Managers of Baylor Scott and White Quality Alliance, a member of Southern Methodist University’s EMIS Distinguished Advisory Council, a member of AWARE, a founding donor to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, a founding member of the Café Momentum Society, a longtime supporter of Dallas Summer Musicals and instrumental in starting DSM’s High School Musical Theater Awards and he even helped as a volunteer painting buildings at Dallas Heritage Village. Many other non-profit organizations have benefitted from Bill’s involvement over many years.
Bill was a life-long lover of flight. He obtained his pilot’s license in 1964 and later actively piloted his beloved Cirrus until the age of 75. He loved all things related to flight and airplanes, attending numerous airshows around the nation or simply parking outside of an airport to watch the planes take off and land. He was also an avid skier on both snow and water.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Loren Plummer, in 1997 and 1999, respectively.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Plummer; children Nedra Plummer Rice, Chris Plummer, Jeff Howard and Cam Plummer; and 9 grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at a later date to honor Bill. Please check the website of Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home where details will be updated, www.sparkman-hillcrest.com.
