Virginia was born in San Antonio, Texas, on April 2, 1941, to the late Gustavo and Ramona Rodriguez. In 1965, she married her sweetheart, Paul L. Garcia. After starting their family in San Antonio, they moved to Plano, Texas, in 1978 and have lived there ever since. Together, they have seen their family and metroplex grow during their 59 years of marriage.
Virginia was known for her warm smile and welcoming personality. She was happiest when surrounded by her family, especially her nine grandchildren and, most recently, her five great-grandchildren.
Besides nurturing her family, she enjoyed helping others and volunteering at church. Virginia belonged to numerous groups at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, including the Bereavement Committee and the Prayer Shawl Ministry. She also served as an Extraordinary Minister Coordinator for a number of years.
Virginia loved to bake and was known to share what she made with others—especially her famous pumpkin bread and repostería (Mexican sugar cookies) around the holidays. She always had time for friends who needed help during difficult times, and Paul would tell her she would have made a wonderful nurse or counselor.
After suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for many years, Virginia is finally at rest and will be missed by her family and numerous friends who cherished her friendship. She is preceded in death by her sister, Mary Ann Quesada, and is survived by her husband, Paul, son Paul D. (Jennifer), and daughters Gina Sullivan (Michael) and Elisa Havelis (Craig). She is also survived by her sister, Cindy Soto of Leakey, Texas, numerous nieces and nephews, and grandchildren Zac Garcia (Madeline, children Maddox, Paul, and Leo), Caylin Cordova (Dylan), Caleb Garcia (Jordan, children Mason and Jameson), Nathan Sullivan, Rachel Sullivan, Danielle Trompeter (Tommy), Andrew Sullivan, Christine Sullivan, and Jason Havelis. They will remember her as being their biggest prayer warrior.
The family would like to thank The Cottages of Chapel Creek and Silvermark Memory Care for their loving care. They also extend their gratitude to the Prestonwood Dementia Care Support Group for fostering an environment to learn more about the disease, share personal experiences, and receive encouragement throughout the process.
A Memorial Service for Virginia will be held on Sunday, July 21, at 7:00 p.m., and a Funeral Mass will be held Monday, July 22, at 11:00 a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 5100 W Plano Pkwy, Plano, TX 75093.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at http://act.alz.org/goto/Virginia_Garcia .
