Vernon Clent Carber

Vernon Clent Carber was born in Dallas on November 30, 1936, to Clarence Carber and Karin Carber, and died on November 14, 2022. He was 85. Born as a true local within the Dallas community, he remained local until the end of his life, though he also saw the world to an exceptional extent. His lifetime travel destinations included locations as varied as Ethiopia, New Zealand, and Slovakia. His wife Anneliese was born in Germany, and the pair traveled Europe extensively in the 1960s, with many subsequent family visits over the years. In midlife, Vernon fulfilled a youthful dream of earning a college degree by attending the University of Oklahoma in a nontraditional program that involved frequent drives to Oklahoma for weekend classes, accompanied by home-based study and composition. He earned a bachelor of liberal studies degree from this accredited and acclaimed university, all in the days before online degree programs and while maintaining his full-time career in graphic arts and printing at a large, local technology company. Vernon pursued hobbies in intense waves throughout his life, spending years going deeply into one pastime before finding interest in another. He was heavily involved in a large Native American flute enthusiast group that met around the country, and he won an award for best new musician during his first year with the group. In other phases of his life, he was keenly interested in hobbies such as woodcarving and sailing, and in his final years he enthusiastically practiced the piano through self-directed study. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Kyle Carber. Vernon was a loving grandfather, father, and husband, and is survived by his wife Anneliese Henriette Carber; and his son, Steven Edward Carber; his sister Olena Bonner, nephew Mike Bonner, niece Cindy Frears, nephew Richard Carber, and their respective families; and his beloved grandchildren, Maya and Sonja. In lieu of flowers, Vernon invited donations to Meals on Wheels.
