Stanley I. Weinberg, lawyer, bridge whiz and chess master passed away April 3, 2016. He was preceded in death by his wife Joan Sandler Weinberg, but left behind many friends and admirers. Stanley was born in 1929 in New York to George and Anna Weinberg. After attending the Bronx High School of Science he finagled his way at age 17 into the US Army. Following WWII, Stanley hopped a train to Oklahoma where the GI Bill allowed him to attend the University in Norman (OU). There he met Joan who was from Oklahoma City. They married and he graduated with a journalism degree. Upon graduation, the newlyweds moved to Dallas where Stanley found a job with KLIF radio where he read the news under the persona of "Stan White". Later he landed a job at the Dallas Times Herald writing sports alongside legendary Blackie Sherrod. While working as a journalist, Stanley attended night school at SMU School of Law, obtaining his JD Degree in 1964. He immediately changed careers and went into practice with legendary defense attorney Charles Tessmer. Sojourning with Mr. Tessmer allowed Stanley to later open his own criminal defense practice. For the majority of his career he practiced with Marvin and Shirley Levin in Dallas under the name of Levin, Weinberg and Levin. Stanley was a lawyer’s lawyer--he could be found most days in the cafeteria of the courthouse counseling younger lawyers and swapping strategy with the elite of the defense bar. He was an ardent member and past officer of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (TCDLA). Stanley was sought after by other members of the bar for his encyclopedic knowledge of Search & Seizure case law. He was a frequent speaker on that subject for the Dallas Criminal Defense Bar. He counted among his many friends attorneys such as Ed Mason, Fred Time and Peter Lesser. In addition to the practice of law Stanley and Joan enjoyed intelligent discussions and friendships with writers, artists and other deep thinkers such as A.C.Green, AJ and Harold Melnick, Sam and Nita Mae Tannebuam, Sylvia and Marvin Greenberg, John and Libby Weeks, Dan and Louette Weiser, Marvin and Marianne Menaker, Jim Lehrer and many more. For the last decade of his life Stanley resided at Town North Village where he had friendships with Sam Berger and anyone else who cared to play bridge or engage in conversation. Stanley is survived by his daughter Jorjana Letow of McKinney; son Gregg Weinberg and wife Melodi of Houston; grandchildren Matthew Letow, Stefanie Clark, Sandler Weinberg and Leigh Weinberg; great grandchildren Zoey and Ethan Clark. A grave-side service will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest Cemetery on Northwest Highway on Thursday April 7, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the March of Dimes.
