Shirley Sue Bullock passed away February 19, 2011, at her home in Dallas, TX. She was born July 26, 1935, in Wamego, KS, to Bertrand Deverne and Velma Lena (Thompson) Bateman. She was the eldest of two children, she and brother David were raised in Manhattan, KS. In May 1953, Shirley graduated from Manhattan High School and married the love of her life, Earl Richard Bullock, whom she’d known since grade school. Because of Earl’s career, they moved often – she’s lived in Indiana, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and California before settling in Texas, where she lived since 1980. She was the beloved mother of three children, David Earl, Shari Sue, and Amy Sue. After moving to Texas, Earl started his own company and Shirley worked at his side. Starting in 1989, she cared for the children of Parkway Hills Baptist Church in their nursery. The babies were her passion and she spent many hours gently rocking her precious charges. As her six grandchildren grew, she spent many a night cheering them on in soccer, basketball, football, track, and baseball. She loved watching them play, no matter the weather she was there. A long time dog lover, Shirley especially loved her Welsh Corgis and cared for many over her lifetime. She loved antiques and treasured the furniture and dishes left her by her mother. Her list of loves is long: the color purple, baking cookies, Kansas State University, baseball, Blue Bell ice cream, Arabian horses, shopping, babysitting her grandchildren. Shirley was a woman with strong values, who cared deeply for those around her and put her family and friends before herself. She was loyal and compassionate, a plain-spoken woman who didn’t mind sharing her thoughts but did so out of the goodness of her heart. She was a valued member of her church family and respected by those she worked with. She loved nothing better than having her family gathered around her. Shirley will be greatly missed by those she left behind.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Bertrand Deverne and Velma Lena (Thompson) Bateman. She is survived by her husband, Earl Richard Bullock, of Dallas, TX; brother, David Deverne and Mary Ann Bateman of Denton, TX; son David Earl and Christine (Mathias) Bullock, of Los Alamos, NM; daughter Shari Sue (Bullock) and Steve Wallace, of Rockwall, TX; and daughter Amy (Bullock) and Brett Barnes, of Watauga, TX; granddaughters Kelsey Lynn Wallace and Alyssa Nicole Wallace of Rockwall, TX; grandsons Luke David and Caleb Coleman Barnes of Watauga, TX; grandsons Alexander Ruslan and Dimitri Robert Bullock of Los Alamos, NM; great grandson Bryceson Kyler Cook, of Rowlett, TX.
