It has been more than one year. It is a good reminder of how quickly things pass for all of us. In 60 years or so it will be as though Scott’s life hadn’t been cut short, because that will mark the natural end of his generation of peers (including myself). 

Now more than ever, it is more clear to Calder and I what a force of nature you were. What a great agent of brightness, brilliance, power, clarity, and courage the world brought into existence for that period of time. It was a period marked by greatness and nobility above all.

Still thinking about Scott every day. He remains a hero in my mind. And after his passing, I have become aware of the many little things that I did not understand or appreciate about him. He deserves to be remembered.

Rest in peace Scott.  We will always love you and keep your memory alive.  Remembering your wonderful sense of humor and intellect.  We miss you so very much.

I didn't know Scott long but I can honestly say he definitely made a difference in this world. He was a man of many talents with many bright ideas. You were only 6 years old when we first met; a sweet and often serious little person. We became good friends soon afterwards. As I often told you, you were my favourite little boy; caring and such well behaved and well mannered. I looked after you often and always did it with pleasure. I remember one day I had to take you to your friend’s house to a play date and as we were walking an old lady complemented me on my handsome boy 🥰. You found it amusing that she thought you were my son 😊
You were an amazing little person and I am sure that you have grown up to be an amazing young man, too, a credit to your parents, and I am sorry that we have lost touch after you moved to Luxembourg.

Scott was one of my close friend’s at UC San Diego during our freshman year in 2013.  We had many conversations that lasted long into the night about the mysteries of the universe and how he thought the world worked.  He had a brilliant mind and cared for his friends.  I wish his family nothing but peace as they navigate this difficult journey.  I hope Scott is resting in the most beautiful paradise to ever exist, full of all the wonders of the universe he believed in.

David and I would like to update all of you on Scott's final resting place.  We had a graveside service with friends on Monday, 22 January 2024.  The cemetery plot is for all three of us and our urns will be placed there as well when the time comes.  The cemetery itself is peaceful and very well maintained.  It is close to where we live here in Luxembourg and we are able to visit often.

Scott, 

It has been nearly two months since we learned of your death.  At times it is still unbelievable to me and I have grieved for you every one of those days.

Some friends gave us wind chimes for comfort during our grieving and they hang in a sheltered spot outside the front door where I can see and hear them.  I like listening to them.   On our desk near the front window are some memories of you: a picture, a candle you gave me, a plant from your memorial service among others which I can see every day.

When I told my counselor that I often feel your presence she said she believes that your spirit, energy or whatever you choose to call it is telling me that you are okay now which was so helpful for me.   So when I hear the chimes or look at the desk I am comforted to know that you are at peace.  There are so many good memories that also keep me going.  You were a thoughtful, creative and talented grandson.

I will miss you every day and love you forever.

We have just moved and while unpacking boxes, I found your graduation announcement—and there was your whole name—so I googled.  I saw the Hines picture and knew it was my friend.  Then I saw another entry, and it was your son.  
Not a thing I can say  can really help right now—except to say, I understand your sadness.

I'm shocked and saddened to hear the news of Scott's passing.

Scott and I were high school classmates at WIS. We had several classes together and often played basketball during lunch break. As I type this I can so clearly picture him shooting a layup. I have many fond memories of our games of pick up, 21, knockout, and horse.

I remember he always exuded a calming and warm presence, and although he was often quiet, he had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. 

My deepest condolences to all his family and loved ones, may his memory be a blessing.

I'm quite shaken to hear the news of Scott's untimely passing, and I'm doing my best to keep my composure as I write these words.

I went to high school with Scott at Washington International School.  Scott and I weren't quite best friends, but Scott was always a good friend and true friend to not only me but to all those around him.  My main memories of Scott involve his exuberance for life, his tranquil demeanor, his rambunctious strength and energy, his ever-present smile, his thoughtful sensibilities, and his immaculate sense of humor.  The picture I've included is from a satire interview article I conducted with Scott, during 10th Grade at WIS, where "Dr. Scott Braaten, D.D.S." posited his musings and reflections on life in only the colorful and imaginative way he could.  As soon as I brought the concept up to Scott, he was excited and all in, always self-aware and in on the joke, happy to play up to the bit to bring smiles to faces and make people laugh.

I remember having Scott over at my house one afternoon.  We watched one of my favorite movies together, Donnie Darko, which Scott had never seen before.  Unfortunately, the TV we watched the movie on at the time was a bit broken, where during particularly bright parts of the movie the screen would flash bright white.  Scott didn't grumble, however, saying "it makes the movie look cooler."  I always admired his truly infectious positivity.

A few years after high school graduation, I had caught up with Scott one day, where we hung out over a walk, lunch, and talked for hours and hours about life, love, God, man, and law.  Scott was so thrilled to share how deeply he had gotten into philosophy in recent years, citing Nietzsche, Plato, Hume, and Kant, among others.  One thing in particular Scott shared that struck a chord with me was when he said he believed that "suffering brings enlightenment", so as to not be discouraged by pain on your path to meaning.

He will be missed.

Scott and Evan and I were buddies.  We had a saying, What do buddies do? (Answer), Buddies always stick together.  

We played many games and the one I remember mostly was when he would run as fast as he could (in the living room) and leap into my lap.  I would then make him say some silly saying before I would let him go.  Then he would do it again.  Of course Scott was much younger as was I.

I remember Scott in many places all over the world in all of the places he and his mom and dad lived.  He was always such a joy to be with.
I remember when Scott caught his first fish and how much fun he and his dad had.  There we so many wonderful experiences with Scott especially those in Luxembourg, Barcelona and London. 

Scott will always be one of my buddies.  I loved him so much and will always miss him.

Scott and I attended High School together in Washington D.C. And to be totally honest we were never that close. Always friendly but rarely interacted outside the classroom or when playing Smash Bros in the Senior Lounge. 

However, in discussing Scott's time in High School with other former classmates, I realized the thoughtful beauty that his mind possessed. Looking back, even through the brief interactions Scott and I had it was clear that he was tugging on the threads of knowledge and thought that I at the time was simply unaware of and/or lacked the maturity to consider. For this, it is with great regret that I did not have the opportunity to learn more from Scott while I still could.

"Structure, which is how we express everything, how I am expressing this message right now! One would think that this is preposterous, and that if it did not truly exist, music would have no meaning whatsoever, nor would anything in existence. However, the river later teaches Siddhartha an even deeper secret, one that addresses the dubiousness of the individual expressed in the statement before. Hesse describes, “Siddhartha listened attentively to this river, to this song of a thousand voices; when he did not listen to the sorrow or laughter, when he did not bind his soul to any one particular voice and absorb it in his Self, but heard them all, the whole, the unity; then the great song of a thousand voices consisted of one word: Om-perfection.” All the pieces come together, and it is apparent how structure is not necessary in order to convey significance in music. At any given point of time in the song, whatever the sound is that is conveyed, mirrors that of the perfect significance of everything in existence. The individual who understands this has now completely embraced the idea of subjectivity, and has found the eternal and infinite bliss that characterizes the ultimate essence of existence."

(5) On music

"Just as one begins to get bored with standard structures, as explained earlier, one also begins to get bored with the idea of structure altogether. The individual asks, “Why does everything need to expressed in a structure? Is there not another means of expressing significance?” This is the question that directs the individual to cross the next threshold point, however it takes much contemplation to reach. This contemplation consists of a combination of philosophical questioning, reflection of complex situations and knowledge, and an eventual increase in the understanding of human interaction and thought. It all funnels into this particular piece of knowledge, which is very well represented by Hermann Hesse in his “Siddhartha”. Siddhartha asks his contemporary, Vasudeva, “Have you also learned that secret from the river; that there is no such thing as time?” Time is the essence of structure, the essence of expressing any individual message. After Vasuveda confirms that he has learned this as well, Siddhartha elaborates, “Nothing was, nothing will be, everything has reality and presence.” We now know that the basis on which structure is formed does not truly exist. Structure, which is how we express everything, how I am expressing this message right now! One would think that this is preposterous, and that if it did not truly exist, music would have no meaning whatsoever, nor would anything in existence."

(4) "Open mindedness implies doubt in one’s own beliefs. Therefore, why should it not imply doubt in contrary beliefs? If one cannot be logically or statistically optimistic about the occurrence of an event, then all opinions can be considered false and equal in value only because the probability does not result in absolute results. Therefore they should not have any toll on the mind. Is this healthy though? Is it not normal to have individual opinions about things? Does this not constitute the definition of subjective truth, the central theme of existentialism? Personally, I can refute the truth of provoked thought. However, I cannot sway the essence of my instinct. If my instinct predicts that the event will occur, that is what I am inclined to believe, unless I acquire statistical, logical (and therefore contextual) knowledge or form a worthless opinion. Recently I’ve been a victim to conventional thinking – I have been able to be persuaded on a certain subject very easily. Due to its unforeseeable nature, would it not be best to listen to my instincts only, and not to some external opinion that I have imposed upon myself? This can provide several benefits, including the feeling of integrity and self-confidence, or on the flipside, if things do not turn out the way instincts predict they will, it has the potential to improve my instincts, effectively making me a better human being. This is obviously all based off of a very limited pool of knowledge concerning the brain and its functions, but the statement I made concerning self-improvement must be true in some regard. This may seem like a trivial issue to be resolving, but everybody has them in some way or another. I just attempt to correct them by tangibly becoming aware of them, as if they are legislation."

(3) “The essence of a personality; peculiar to observe. Crude in a humbling sense. For instance, everybody can be put in a position where they have no control over their pride and ego due to an intolerable amount of fear or discomfort to the point where the often deceivingly apparent continuance of their life depends completely on natural, unprecedented action, which can invoke significant feelings of abandonment and forces the individual to mentally adapt even though it is often seemingly impossible.

Everyone, whether conscious of it or not, worries about being consistent with their personality, opinions, and morals. Within society, it is a disgrace to act in an alternate manner. This is because consistency demonstrates a stable mind that can make rational decisions according to a certain context of knowledge and experience. Whether or not their knowledge is logically correct is another question, and is also less important to function in society. To be consistent is to preserve one’s personality, and this can be reworded to say to be consistent is to preserve oneself. This is a natural instinct common in all life on Earth. (Additionally, the ability to express one’s own personality to the point of near divinity yields an incredible amount of significance, which is a byproduct of consistency and is what most strive for).”

(1) “The idea of visualization as a means of finding meaning in a system. In order to capture its essence, the process involves observing overarching patterns in everyday actions, then continually observing one specific pattern, to the point where it becomes a common occurrence. If attention is not paid to these occurrences, the consistent nature of these patterns is not evident. With the knowledge of these certain patterns, new thoughts and emotions are formed within the mind, which leads to a broadened perspective. It would be unwise not to mention the value the produced thoughts and emotions can yield.”

(2) “Compare the human mind and the universe. The human mind is finite and will only be able to comprehend so much, yet the universe is infinite. The universe does not have an absolute truth. Therefore, the universe is not perfect. Either that, or the universe is perfect and follows a code of rules that is both contradictory and incomprehensible to the code harbored by human beings. It should be known that the way in which we view how things work is not necessarily universal. Our rules of logic, the way we think about beginning and endings, even the essence of being along with the thought of a supernatural force or entity – that is not necessarily universal. Now, go, think of things in the opposite way and believe it, release yourself from the standard, instinctual level of human comprehension. Think right is wrong, think dark is light, forget about a “beginning” and “ending”, think anything you want, and most importantly, BELIEVE it. Perhaps with this exposure to completely new ways of thinking, revolutionary thought can occur.”

I will say a bit more. It's somewhat frustrating to me that people seem not to have known Scott for his ideas and the magnitude of his mental powers. They were so far beyond what the average person is capable of that it's difficult to make a comparison. 

But it's understandable, Scott kept his ideas private as all great men do until they can properly organize them.  So I will share just a few of his writings from 2013-2014. Remember that he was only 18 years old when he wrote these, and he wrote for no one but himself. I think he would have been okay with my sharing this, even in favor of it. It seems an injustice to shatter his flow of ideas into small pieces but perhaps someday the rest might be shared.

His language skills were so impressive, his ability to finally figure out which words were English versus Russian.  It was so fun having Mikel and Scott visit us in Seattle and spend time with my parents at their home in Leschi once Ian and I moved back stateside.  We always admired the way you raised Scott as a global student of the world.  

This reminds us that we have to treasure every day and find time to spend with those we care about in our lives.

Dear Mikel Ann and David,

I learned this morning of your loss and have held Scott and you in my thoughts throughout the day.  After all my years working with young people and their parents, recalling other such losses, I should know the right words, but I simply don’t.  But I do have memories. I recall a child who joined us at ISL, already a seasoned traveler, who made yet another home in Luxembourg with his family and new friends.  I picture a day, some years later, when you – Mikel Ann – and Scott approached me at WIS, probably at a new family event, and asked, “Do you remember us?”  I did indeed, and I was pleased to know that Scott (and I) knew one familiar face on campus as he began his WIS years.  I was among the fortunate few who witnessed much of Scott’s academic path from childhood to young manhood, one that culminated when I handed him his WIS diploma.  

Calder wrote these words on this memorial site: “He introduced me to Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, Hermann Hesse, and many other thinkers and writers beyond his years, encouraged me to think critically and independently, and helped shape me to such a degree that I wouldn't be half the person I am today without him.”  Wow, what a tribute!  I too loved those authors when I was young, and I wish I’d known to share that love with Scott.  Such authors struggled to find meaning in life, each wrestling with the dark side, and each leaving us wiser and better because of them.  As Calder writes, Scott dwelt in a world, “beyond his years.”   I suspect that many others found wisdom in Scott’s world, and joy in his friendship. 

I wish you an abundance of cherished memories and a path toward understanding.

Oh, Mikel and David. I mourn with you. To lose a child. There is no worse experience. … There but for the grace of God go I. 
    As you know, Scott meant so much to Evan and Calder. They have talked about the three of them being of one mind – that’s how closely they connected with each other. 
     Here are a few memories, which I hope will be comforting on some level: 
    Shortly after Evan and Scott first met, Evan used Scott’s phone to call me. Of course, I put that number into my phone immediately, and every time Evan did not answer his phone when I really needed him to, I would then call Scott. Then Scott would hand his phone to Evan, who was nearby. (Thank you, Scott.)
    The summer before their senior year, Evan and Scott got jobs on Long Beach Island, New Jersey. I will never forget the look on their faces as they drove off – full of dreams and expectations and excitement about the adventure ahead. 
     And there were many nights when Scott would come over and Evan and Calder and Scott would go for a walk. Occasionally, I had reason to go look for them. I’d usually find them sitting on the balcony of the old Howard Law School library, deep in conversation. 
     Scott had so much promise. He truly was a remarkable person. That his life has been cut so short is a tragedy. 
     To Mikel and David, as a fellow parent, I want to say emphatically that I know that you both were very loving parents. When your child is struggling, it is always incredibly hard to know what to do. I know you always did what you thought was best for Scott. 
     To Scott, rest in peace. Your demons can no longer touch you. But know that you left a mark on the world and you will never be forgotten.

Scott was a great friend and the first friend i made when i arrived in Luxembourg. I wish that the world could know what a beautiful and unique person he was and how rare his talents were. 

Scott had a wonderfully open-minded and good-natured personality. He was kind to me and open to speaking with me even though I was just 15 and he was 18 when we first became friends. Whereas all the other older boys I met were put off by the age gap, Scott always treated me like an equal and never made me feel shy or insecure. He was wonderful in that way. Throughout my adolescence he guided me and we had frequent discussions on philosophy and the meaning of life. He always expressed to me a genuine desire to help humanity.

I wish above all that people could see what a beautiful mind Scott had. I wish that all could bear witness to the true depth and complexity of his mind. He could write an essay without any preparation on the most profound philosophical subjects. Ideas simply came to him naturally and intuitively. He was constantly thinking and writing about new ideas, and it seemed to me that anything a person could think about, Scott had analyzed in depth.  

Scott, you were a brother and a mentor to me. You were, as Dostoevsky wrote, one of the few people capable of taking a new step and uttering a new word. You made the positive impact on the world that you always wanted to, even if you may not have realized it. You were original and true, and the mark you have left on the world will linger until all things cease to be.

I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Scott's passing. I remember him as a sweet and kind little boy - he actually gave Zack his first game boy which he treasured for years.

I pray that God will comfort and sustain you through this difficult period.

Scott was one of the most exceptional people the world has ever seen, especially in modern times. His interest in ideas and capacity to abstract his perceptions of the world into wonderfully unique interpretations of existence was a gift that might only occur once in many hundreds of millions if not billions of people.

Scott I’m sorry that the darkness of modernity overtook you and brought you to this end, but we’re you still here I know you would take consolation in knowing that I appreciated  the significance of your existence and will do so until I die.
