Roman's passing hit me hard.  I've known him for so many years and he was a blessed addition to my family.  Although we weren't bosom buddies he was one of the dearest persons I've ever known.  I loved his laughter, his dedication to family.  He was slow to anger and quick to assist in any way he could.  I loved his quips of the moment's events.  As much as I loved hearing him laugh, I loved more the way he would make me laugh.  He was a person to be admired, one who endured adversity and yet held himself with unwavering self-respect.  I am going to miss Roman and the light he brought to the world around him.

It was with profound sadness that I was informed of the passing of my childhood friend Roman. Along with his family Roman became my next door neighbor when he was about ten years old or so, and we met in the back alley of Cowles Court along with Frank DiTommaso and Dan Romano. Roman was an interesting fellow and the meeting was equal to the circumstances, playing ball of course. It took no time at all for Roman to be added to the list of children in the Cowles Court, 64th Road, Penelope Ave, and 80th to 82nd street square of children regularly seen every afternoon and every day on weekends and in the summer. His travel to a different school every day did not detract from his acceptance as one of the group. Before long he was well incorporated into baseball, stickball, football, and basketball activities. He was agile for his size and bulk, and all knew he was a powerful guy. He was perfectly loyal to our group, and his physical characteristics soon earned him a kind of " guard dog " image with us and to others in the wider neighborhood. We weren't a really tough area for New York City, but it was still urban and occasional incursions occurred with Roman fearlessly accepting the M.O. that " if you want to dust it up with them you have to get through me first. "  

There are dozens of memories. Once, as we played touch football an angry neighbor hollered at us and sprayed us with a hose to stop the game. Then, I saw the wheels turn in Roman's head as he sprang forward wrestling the hose away the neighbor retreating to his house. The soaked Roman returned to the street to say " let's get this game finished. . ."

Condolences to your family Roman, and may the angels speed you into paradise. You will be missed, and remembered always.
