Robert George Nelson, 68, of Forney, Texas, born on August 24, 1956 in Garland, Texas and passed away on October 17, 2024. Robert is survived by his mother, Joann Nelson, his brother Ric Nelson, two sons and a daughter-in-law Jonathan Nelson and Michael & Lacey Nelson, two grandchildren, Elle and Eli Nelson, 6 brother and sisters-in-laws, and 12 nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Susan Kay (Moser) Nelson and his father, Paul Jack “Pete" Nelson.
He grew up in Garland, Texas and on the family ranch in Canton, Texas. After graduating from North Garland High School, Robert attended Stephen F. Austin State University, where he met his wife, Susan. Robert was an active member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity holding leadership roles, including president and treasurer. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration and worked in commercial building product sales. He and Susan married in 1977 and they moved to Houston for a few years before eventually returning to DFW, settling in Forney, close to family.
Throughout his work life, he never met a stranger and built many special lifelong relationships. He always mentioned that he loved to go to work because it meant he got to see his friends every day.
Robert had a passion for sports. He especially loved baseball, playing in intramural and community league softball, coaching his kids’ teams, teaching his grandkids and umpiring college and high school baseball. He was a member of the Texas Association of Sports Officials for 25 years and served as President of the Dallas chapter. He made an impact on many players, coaches and officials, not only teaching and strategizing on the game, but also sharing his wisdom with a laugh. Robert was an avid golfer as well. He was a lifelong learner and always competitive, perfecting the swings on the range until his death. He spent 27 years with his country club family at the Dallas Athletic Club and travelled the US and internationally with close friends to master some of the world's top courses.
He was a wine enthusiast and enjoyed traveling the world with his family. He seemed to be happiest when others were happy, especially surrounded with family, friends, good food and wine.
Beloved by all that knew him, Robert lived a life of service and sacrifice to family, friends and others. He was always up for a healthy debate and never shied away from a difficult conversation around politics or religion. He regularly shared his deeply rooted faith and love for God. As a 40-year member of the First United Methodist Church in Rockwall, rarely was there a missed Sunday service and a constant love for the church. Robert's faith and good works can be seen throughout his daily life and assuredly will continue to impact many for generations to come. Whether he was caring for a friend or family in the hospital, hospice, or regularly checking in with caregivers in DFW and Houston, he was always there to provide a listening ear, a shoulder to cry, words of faith, and good laugh.
He was a welcoming, kind, caring servant of God. Robert spread laughs, smiles and joy wherever he went and leaves us with a legacy of faith, hope and love.
A memorial service for Robert will be held Saturday, November 16, 2024 at 10:00 AM at First United Methodist Church of Rockwall, 1200 E Yellow Jacket Ln, Rockwall, TX 75087, followed by a reception at 11:00 AM.
