Robert Russel Montgomery, 96, of Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2023. Bob was born on August 3, 1926, in Maulden, Kentucky and was raised in Jackson County, Kentucky. He and grew up on the family farm and completed high school. He was preceded in death by his wife Rita Montgomery. They were married on June 23, 1951.
Bob enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after completing high school and served in the Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged and worked several jobs throughout the late 1940s. He later rejoined the Marine Corps and was commissioned a 2ndLt and became an Armor Officer. Shortly thereafter he served as a Platoon Leader in the Korean conflict, in numerous positions stateside and overseas and in Vietnam as a Regimental Executive Office. In 1971 Bob retired from the Marine Corps as a LtCol with over 26 years of service, multiple awards to include two Purple Hearts and participated in combat operations in 3 major conflicts.
Moving to Dallas after the Marine Corps Bob embarked on a second career at The 1st National Bank of Dallas. As a manager he led a large department clearing all check cashing and participated in several projects. He retired after a very successful second career and he and Rita traveled extensively, expanded their passions for their beloved pets, and contributed greatly to many service and charitable organizations.
Robert is survived by his nephews Greg, Paul, Ray, and Matt Ryan as well as the rest of the Ryan family.
Visitation will be at Sparkman-Crane on Monday, March 27th from 5-7 PM with a Rosary at 5:30. Funeral Mass will be at St Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday March 22nd at 10 AM. Bob will be laid to rest on April 11 at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery at 11 AM.
