Robert “Bob” Donald McDermott of Dallas, Texas, passed on June 19, 2016. He was born on October 6, 1922 in New Haven Connecticut to Francis Lawrence and Margaret (O’Donnell) McDermott. Bob married Christine Andrew, on November 12, 1949 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in West Haven, Connecticut.
Bob served in the United States Army during World War II in the 257th Engineer Combat Battalion. He was a part of the European African Middle Eastern Campaign from 1943 – 1946 and on April 29th, 1945 he was part of the liberation of Dachau, a Nazi Concentration Camp. He attended Stone Business College in New Haven, Connecticut and graduated with an Associate Degree. From 1946 to 1972 Bob served as the President of McDermott Steel Specialties, Inc. in Branford, Connecticut. He later worked as the Superintendent of Erection at Thames Valley Steel, Inc. in New London, Connecticut from 1972 to 1988. Bob was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Christine McDermott; sons Brian T. McDermott and wife Sylvia, of Savoy, Illinois and Robert J. McDermott and wife, Kathryn, of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Kara McDermott Reller and husband, Nicolas, of Winona, Minnesota, Andrew, Evan, Thomas, Kelly, Stephen, Robert, and Kristin McDermott and one great grandson, Stephen.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Thomas F. McDermott and sister, Margaret (McDermott) Drake.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 11:00 AM at All Saints Catholic Church, 5231 Meadowcreek Dr, Dallas, TX 75248. Committal services will later take place at 2:00 PM at the Dallas/Ft. Worth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Catholic Charities of Dallas.
