Robert J. Lankford, 84, lived a long and fruitful life before losing his battle with Alzheimer’s on April 19th, at Sunrise Assisted Living of Dallas, Texas. He was born in 1929 in Edwardsville, IL to Mr. and Mrs. James M. Lankford. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, La Vern Olney Lankford; his children CDR (Ret.) Bruce and Lisa Lankford, SSG Craig Lankford, the Rev. Dr. David and Leigh Green, and LtCol Stuart Lankford; his grandchildren Tyler, Amber, Sarah, Joshua, Benjamin, Daniel, Matthew, and Jacob; and his sister-in-law Dorothy Lankford, along with her sons James and George and their families. Bob graduated from SMU in 1950 where he was a Sigma Chi. He spent his entire career with New England Mutual Life in insurance, trusts, and business and estate planning. He was a Chartered Life Underwriter, a Life Member of the company’s Leaders Association, and was awarded a 50 year service medal in 2001. Highly respected by colleagues and clients, Bob also received New England Life’s prestigious Vanguard Award. He was a volunteer for the YMCA and Boy Scout Troop 70, belonged to the Toast Masters, and attended Park Cities Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed watching football, polo, old westerns, and musicals, in addition to reading history and biographies. He also loved big band music, especially when dancing with his lovely wife – his favorite dance partner. Bob adored his bride, and was quite proud of his children and eight grandchildren. His favorite family activities were biking, tennis, and camping. Bob’s memorial service will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest at 2pm on Friday, April 26th, in the Chapel.
