It all started when Rob (or “Robby” to his family) was born on September 26, 1952, in Austin, Texas. Rob was a legendary attorney in the family law community for over thirty-eight years. He was also a beloved husband and father, amazing mentor and stalwart friend.
Rob was a distinguished alumnus of The University of Texas at Dallas. The school of Economic Sciences created a professorship in his name in August 2014. He received his law degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1981. Rob was an early thought-leader and pioneer in the family bar and wrote leading articles for the profession. He had a passion for excellence and counseled his lawyers to always learn and be a student of the law. He worked first for McBeth, Robertson & Holmes, and then Koons, Rasor, Fuller & McCurley, before creating Robertson & Holmes. Since June 1995, Rob was the owner of the Dallas office of what is now Holmes Diggs, PLLC. Rob was Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1986, a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers since 1991, and a Fellow in the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers since 2007, where he also served on the Board of Managers. He was also a Certified Financial Planner by the Board of CFP Standards since 1994. Rob was also an honorary Admiral in the Texas Navy. He received numerous awards and honors, including being listed for over two decades as a Texas Super Lawyer and a Texas’ Top Attorney. He was further listed multiple years in Best Lawyers in America, and the firm was named a Best Law Firm in Texas by Best Lawyers in America.
Rob always had time to lend an ear and offer advice. Whether you were his friend, client, or employee, he was your biggest advocate. He was well-known for his rapier-like wit and his disdain for what was deemed "appropriate”. Rob loved to travel all over the world with his wife, Wendy, adored his four cats, enjoyed spending time outside and taking in the views of his expansive grounds, playing golf, watching the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, and the television series Game of Thrones, as well as continuing to study the law. He was truly one-of-a-kind and simply irreplaceable….
Rob was preceded in death by his father, Robert E. Holmes Sr. (Bob) and his mother, Mary Sue Kerbow. He is survived by his loving wife and constant companion, Wendy Marchant Holmes; his son, Austin Matthew Holmes; his sister, Carole H. Lake and her husband, Larry W. Lake of Austin, Texas; his brother, David C. Holmes of Kingwood, Texas; a niece, Leslie Lake of Dallas; a nephew, Jeffrey Lake (Corina) of Austin, Texas; and numerous cousins. A memorial service celebrating his life and honoring his legacy will be held on Friday, April 26th, 2019, at 12 PM at Sparkman Hillcrest, 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas, Texas, 75225.
