Pamela Barry Powell, age 84, passed away August 14, 2013 at her home in Dallas, Texas. Pam was born on September 1, 1928 in Macksburg, Ohio and graduated from the University of Cincinnati where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
Pam also lived with her family in Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio; Grosse Pointe, Michigan; and Whittier, California before making Dallas her permanent home in 1979. She left a lasting impression on each community in which she lived and made cherished friendships. Her home was a second home to many, and her kitchen was always the heart of her home. Pam loved family and friends, the family pets, her country, her church, and Dallas sports teams. She was a passionate and accomplished bridge player and enjoyed vigorous political discourse. Pam gave generously of herself to many community organizations including The Assistance League of Dallas (where she was a past president), Dallas Children’s Medical Center, Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, Women of Rotary, and The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary. She is preceded in death by her first husband William H. Sasser, her second husband C. E. Powell, and her parents Lillian and William Carl Barry. She is survived by her five children: Stephen Alan Sasser (and his wife Tobie Sasser) of Dallas; Salley Ann Gordon of Dallas; Sandra Sasser Wijnberg of New York City; Nan Elisabeth Murphy (and her husband Christopher Murphy) of Alna, ME; and William Barry Sasser (and his wife Sandy Sasser) of Santa Ana, CA. Pam is also survived by her six beloved grandchildren Lauren Sasser McCulloch (and her husband Scott McCulloch), Jeffrey William Sasser, Nicholas Scott Wijnberg, Jacob Barry Wijnberg, Will Sasser, and Kate Sasser. Great grandson John Edward McCulloch was the new joy in her life.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 11122 Midway Road, Dallas, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Pam’s memory to Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, 5351 Samuel Blvd, Dallas, TX 75228 or The Caring Fund of Faith Presbyterian Hospice, 6100 Colwell Blvd, Suite 225, Irving, TX 75039.
