Mary Laqueta Wells Wright was born on May 23, 1955 to Mary Elizabeth Carroll and Alvie J “Buck” Wells in Dallas, Texas. Escorted by angels, she went to be with her Lord on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at 9:00 am.
For the first half of her life she lived in Dallas, Texas and the second half in Winterhaven, Florida. She retired to Athens, Texas in February of 2021.
Mary is survived by her life partner, Tommy E Brim and devoted puppy Daisy Mae; children: Alvie Wayne “Joey” Lindley, Misty Lindley Rashell (Chris) and Mary Elizabeth Darlene Colbert (Sean); grandchildren: Kaitlend Elizabeth Lynn Gonzalez (Sean Bennett), Megan LeeAnn Gonzalez, Hubert Lee Gonzalez, Christopher Frettinger, and Faith Colbert; great grandchildren: Adaline Elizabeth Lee Benavidez, Colt Grayson Bennett and Tre Colbert; siblings: Jackie Carder, Ronnie and Linda Wells, Linda Whitley, Tommy and Nancy Lawrence, Donald and Coni Whitley, Brack and Sharon Whitley, and Richard Whitley as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents: Mary Lewis, AJ Buck Wells and Erma Wells; sister, Linda Darlene Carder, brothers, Earl Whitley and Alvin Lee Wells.
Mary was known as Mary, Momma, Laqueta, Queet, Grandma, GiGi, Aunt Queet, BFF, friend, neighbor and coworker. Known by Tom as his Queen Fire Ant, Wild Injian, or just plain “Love”, depending on her mood.
Mary adored her family and loved being around people. She liked to have a good time. She had a contagious laugh and was very kind, compassionate and giving. She was an independent woman and liked being in charge. Almost as much as she loved her family, she loved her dogs; every single one of them. She had a special place in her heart for her Great Dane Daisy Mae and carried that name to her current Jack Russell Daisy Mae.
Throughout her life, she worked in a variety of jobs including Daltile in Dallas, Florida Tile in Orlando, Pounds Field Airport in Tyler, Publix Supermarket in Winterhaven and served many years as a caregiver. She loved taking care of others even while requiring others to take care of her. She loved her beautiful garden and fruit trees in Florida, enjoyed cooking and baking, traveling, Mexican food and CHOCOLATE of any kind.
Mary had a big heart and continued that desire in the last two years, as she supported the Servants Heart homeless ministry by making sandwiches and donating whenever possible.
She loved Jesus! In 2022, she participated in the NLT One Year Bible Study and read through the whole Bible in one year. After she lost her sight, using the audio app was her favorite way of reading. It was a life-long goal she proudly accomplished even while being so ill. Her greatest desire and her mission in the last couple of years became encouraging her children and grandchildren to learn to love the Bible as much as she did.
Rest in peace, sweet girl, in the presence of your Sweet Jesus.
“So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.” John 16:22 NLT
