She grew up in East Dallas, Texas with her older brother, Steve, and younger brother Richard. Before her passing, Mary Ellen shared with her family that she was thankful for her upbringing and the people who surrounded her throughout her life.
Mary Ellen attended St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School for elementary and middle school, and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School Class of '68. She went on to receive her associates degree from Richland College.

Mary Ellen loved gardening and cooking with what she grew in her own backyard. She loved traveling the world, camping, hiking and horseback riding. She also had a great love for rescuing senior corgis. As a person, she valued her independence, had a quiet strength about her and a natural elegance. As a friend, she was selfless, dependable, and fun to be around. As a parent, she was loving, kind and supportive of whatever her children and grandchildren wanted to do in life. She was a proud mother and grandmother who loved to share in her family's adventures and achievements.
She loved spending time at the Dallas Arboretum, in the countryside, or in her backyard gardening and relaxing. She absolutely adored her four grandchildren and would spend as much time with them as she could.
