Marvin Franklin Poer was born on December 8, 1927, in Simms, TX, a small community southwest of Texarkana, named after his uncle Harvey Simms, and passed away on November 23, 2019. He graduated from James Bowie High School in 1946 and enlisted in the 1st Cavalry Division of the US Army Japan Occupation for two years. He attended the University of North Texas in 1948, but was called back to active service from 1950-1951. He graduated from the University of North Texas with a BA in Business Management in 1952 and worked for Western Union in Alpine, TX, and then The Associates as an auto repo man. Shortly after, his property tax career began at Mobil Oil. In 1964 he started Marvin F. Poer and Company, which is one of the largest and most respected independent property tax firms in the country today. Marvin was a trailblazer and an icon in his field who stood for integrity, honor and loyalty.
Marvin is preceded in death by his sisters, Marie, Willie, Bess and Ada and his son, John. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Aileen, son David and wife Kerry and daughter in law Sally; four grandchildren: Steven Poer, Laney Poer Booher and husband Brandon, Wesley Poer and wife Ally, Kyle Poer and wife Kristen; five great grandchildren Bryce, Bennett and Blake Booher and Elle and Theo Poer; sister Katie Jo Carlile.
Marvin and Aileen have been active members of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church for over forty years. He was a past Senior Warden and served the parish in many leadership roles, including the Good Shepherd Episcopal School Board.
