She was born in Torreon, Mexico, on April 27, 1954, where she spent her early childhood. She later came to El Paso, Texas, and gained her full citizenship. She attended and graduated from Irvin High School in El Paso, where she became ROTC platoon leader and officer, and also won the ROTC beauty queen title. She then attended the University of El Paso for 3 years.
Martha attended a Baptist Church in El Paso where she learned of Jesus Christ and his sacrificial gift to us all. She went on several missionary trips with her church, and continued her daily Bible studies.
She then made the move to Dallas, Texas, where on a blind date, met her future husband, Ken Baker. They married on September 19, 1981.
Martha started a career in banking in 1982 at Mercantile Bank as a collector. She continued in banking, advancing herself to Bank Officer, then to Assistant Vice President, and finally held the position of Vice President for 3 different banks, retiring in 2019 after 37 years.
Martha graduated from the University of North Texas with a 4.0 GPA in business.
For years, Martha and her husband volunteered at a large cat rescue facility, at which they sponsored and raised a Siberian tiger from the age of 8 weeks to 5 years old.
She loved the Lord, and read God’s word every day. She would witness to everyone and always tell them “God is in control and in command” and “God first!”
Martha is survived by her husband, Ken Baker, her sister Stephanie Branch, brother Paul Hernandez and his wife Martha Hernandez, sister in law Mary Baker, brother in law Ron Baker and her nephews and nieces, Marcos Branch, Andy Branch Jr. and Liz Loveless.
The visitation will be held on Friday, August 4, 2023 at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The funeral service will occur on Saturday, August 5, 2023 in the funeral home chapel at 10:00am, with entombment following in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Grand Mausoleum.
