Karen “Kay” Rea Hammond, a beacon of light and love in every life she touched, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Born on November 16, 1942, she graced the world with her presence for 80 remarkable years.
Kay was a paragon of kindness, generosity, and compassion. A distinguished real estate broker in the Dallas area for 53 years. She founded Apartment World and Special Settings, a corporate relocation company that was later acquired by Ebby Halliday Realtors. Kay's passion for community engagement also saw her as an active member of the Woman's Club, Vital Mind, JDRF, the Alzheimer's Association, A.W.A.R.E, and the Marianne Scruggs Garden Club.
Her warmth was felt by all who were privileged to know her. She had an innate ability to make people feel valued, heard, and loved, and she left an indelible mark on countless hearts.
A devoted mother, Kay's love for her family was unparalleled. She dedicated her life to nurturing, guiding, and supporting her blended family of six children. Her enduring love extended to her 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, whom she cherished deeply.
Kay's legacy is not just the family she leaves behind, but the countless lives she has touched with her boundless generosity and infectious joy. She had an extraordinary gift of seeing the good in everyone and every situation, a perspective that inspired those around her to strive for the same.
She was preceded in death by her husband and love of her life James W. (Jim) Hammond and her parents Kenneth L. Rea and Louise Girod Rea. She is survived by her children, Kim Harmon Gatlin of Dallas, TX, Paul (Wendy) Harmon of Dallas, TX, Tracy Hammond Cullens of Dallas, TX, Jeff Hammond of PV, MX, Jon (Alice) Hammond of Martinez, CA, Julie Hammond Goff (Tim) of Murrieta, CA, and favorite son in law Rudy Gatlin of Nashville, TN.
Kay, having been raised as an only child, cherished friendships with an intensity that stood out. She valued her friends as if they were family. Blessed with a close-knit circle of friends, they shared countless memories over the years. Many friends, even those who grew up alongside her own children, fondly considered Kay their second mom, a testament to her nurturing and inclusive nature. Whether it was lunching at their favorite spots, indulging in spirited card games, or traveling to new destinations, Kay relished these moments. The bonds she formed and the adventures they embarked upon together were sources of immense joy in her life.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this time. The celebration of life will be on Monday, October 16th, 3pm at Highland Park United Methodist Church with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
