Judy Rains Johnston was the only child of Leslie and Roy Nell Rains of Dallas. Born in Ennis, Texas, she was a graduate of Grand Prairie High School. She held a Doctor of Education in Educational Administration from East Texas State University, Master of Education from North Texas State University and Bachelor of Arts from North Texas State University.
Judy was an outstanding educator, serving in Dallas ISD for 40 years as a teacher and central office administrator. Her greatest delight was in arranging large events for the celebration of teachers and students.
Following retirement, she served as an evaluator for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, visiting and evaluating for accreditation some 30 schools as Quality Assurance Review Chairperson. She worked with secondary schools in Garland ISD, Richardson ISD, Ft. Worth ISD, Highland Park ISD, Denison ISD and numerous charter and private pre-schools, elementary, and middle schools. She was elected Chairperson, Region XIV Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; an elected delegate to the National Accreditation Commission of Secondary Schools and served as the Texas Representative on the Founding Board for AdvancED, the successor to SACS.
During her lengthy career, Judy also served as an Adjunct Professor in Educational Administration, at Texas A&M University—Commerce and part-time instructor, Dallas County Community College District.
Personally, her family and travel brought the most enjoyment. In the last several years she, husband Bob and friends took more than 25 cruises to various parts of the world. She was an avid theater goer and especially enjoyed musical theater. She was an excellent cook, very creative, enjoyed shopping for her family, and loved watching football.
She is survived by husband Robert L. (Bob) Johnston, daughters Shelly Moore and Sharla Hudspeth of Dallas, son-in-law John D. Hudspeth, stepsons Dr. Greg Johnston, daughter-in-law Maggie Fu, New York City and Jeff Johnston, Austin Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Lindsay, Lesley and Libby Hudspeth of Dallas, Kate Johnston of Los Angeles, Lucy Johnston and Andrew Fu of New York City.
Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at BUMC for providing excellent care over the last several months.
A Memorial Reception will be held October 6, 1-3 pm at Grove Hill Funeral Home, 3920 Samuell Blvd.
