Born October 16,1921, in Greenville, Texas. Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Garland Roach and Mary Hagan Roach, infant son Patrick Hagan Roach, son Austin Allen Roach and his beloved wife of 56 years, Betty Allen Roach. Dr. Roach died peacefully in his home at Presbyterian Village North, Dallas, Texas, on December 25, 2021.
A graduate of Greenville High School, Dr. Roach entered Howard Payne University and then transferred to Baylor University. He graduated Baylor with a B.A. Degree in Chemistry in 1942. He then entered Southwestern Medical School and the United States Navy. He graduated from Southwestern in 1945 and served in the Navy as a medical officer until 1948, when he was honorably discharged. He then served as a Pediatric Resident at Children’s Hospital in Dallas until 1950, when he established his private practice in Pediatrics in Dallas. He retired from his pediatric practice in 1999.
Dr. Roach was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the founding board of Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, a founding member of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder Emeritus, and a member of Northwood Country Club where he spent many happy hours on the golf course and tennis courts. In retirement he also served on the board of The Presbyterian Village North Foundation.
Associated with his medical practice; he was a member of Dallas County Medical Society, Texas Pediatric Society and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Southwestern Medical School. His volunteer work included work with the Indian Clinic in Oak Cliff, East Dallas Clinic, Meals on Wheels and North Dallas Shared Ministries Medical Clinic.
For decades he very much enjoyed toiling in his vegetable garden and sharing his crops with family and friends.
Dr. Roach is survived by a son, Joseph Garland Roach, III; his daughter, Elisabeth Ruth Baine, his grandsons; Allen Roach, Ely Roach, Joseph Garland Roach, IV; his granddaughters, Becky Roach Humphrey, Jennifer Roach Herrmann, Betsy Baine Whiteaker, Caroline Baine Nichols; great- grandchildren, Lyndsay Humphrey Pospisil, Zachary Humphrey, Emma Humphrey, Julia Humphrey, Andrew Herrmann, Noah Herrmann, Joseph Garland Roach, V, Jake Roach, Baileigh Whiteaker, Ashley Whiteaker, Brock Whiteaker, Nora Nichols, Freddie Nichols; and great-great grandson, Atticus Pospisil.
He also had great love for his in-laws, Metta Roach, Liz Roach, Bob Baine, Pong Trabdee, Candace Roach, Jessica Roach, Michael Humphrey, Michael Herrmann, Tyler Whiteaker, Paul Nichols and Nick Pospisil.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, 9800 Preston Road, Dallas, TX, 75234 on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at 11:00 am, followed by a reception at the church. The service will be available by live stream through the church's website at phpc.org and clicking on "live streaming".
