Joe Oscar Neuhoff Jr. died peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family on the evening of his 86th birthday, March 8, 2024. Born at St Paul’s Hospital and raised in Dallas, Joe attended Christ the King School when it opened in 1947, followed by Jesuit High School. In 1959, Joe graduated from the University of Notre Dame and began working at Neuhoff Bros. Packers, Inc. Fourteen years later, he changed course and founded Industrial Metal Specialties, a steel fabrication company which he owned and ran for nearly 50 years.
As a man with a true servant’s heart, Joe dedicated six years in the Air National Guard, was a member of the Knights of Malta, and was involved in liturgical services at Christ the King Church and St John’s Nepomucene Church in Ennis, Texas. Recently, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Human Letters from the University of Dallas where he served on the Board of Trustees for more than 50 years. Joe was active in the community and held leadership roles in many civic and charitable associations. Some of his favorites were the University of Dallas, the Catholic Foundation, Catholic Charities, UT Southwestern Foundation, Salesmanship Club, Goodwill of Dallas, Dallas Association of Retarded Citizens, The Serra Club and ARC of Dallas.
Joe was a person of faith, family and building a better future. His personality ranged from an apologetic grouch to a compassionate disciple and much in between. Joe loved hunting, fishing, photography, and spending time at Little Sandy Club in East Texas. As a mechanical engineer, he always had a project in the works. On his visits to see grandchildren, their fix-it lists were a mile long. Family was everything to Joe and his proudest accomplishments were his children and grandchildren, all of whom admired his loyalty, strength, and unwavering love of God.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ann Folsom Neuhoff and Joseph O. Neuhoff and sister, Rebecca Neuhoff Griffith. Joe is survived by his five children and eleven grandchildren: his daughter Laurel Elizabeth, Tres and Benner Page, daughter Donna Ann, Pearson, Campbell and George Kurka, daughter Emily Pearson, and her husband Tyler and Josephine VanHoutan, son Joseph Oscar III (Joey) and his wife Sarah, Joseph IV and Jack Neuhoff, daughter Virginia Folsom (Ginger) and her husband R.J., Ricky, Patrick and Scarlett Redican. He is also survived by Donna, the mother of his children, brother-in-law, Don Griffith, two nieces and five nephews; first cousins Mary Ann Collins, Nancy Gallagher, Joe Boyd Neuhoff, Thomas Neuhoff, Robert Neuhoff, Mary Balesteri, Gretchen Flanagan, Barbara Schlachter, Pamela Farnsworth, John D. Neuhoff Jr, and Felix Saino, and many second and third cousins.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 8017 Preston Road, Dallas, with a reception to follow in the Community Center next door. A Vigil will be held in his honor on Friday, March 22 at 6:00 p.m. at Christ the King. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to any of the aforementioned charities.
