John “Jay” M. Hoffman, age 66, of Dallas, Texas passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 28, 2023. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island on December 21, 1956 to John and Judith. Jay grew up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. He graduated from Glenbard West High School in 1975 and from University of Illinois in 1979 with a B.S. in Accountancy and passed his CPA exam on the first sitting. Jay began his career with the international public accounting firm Arthur Andersen & Co. and then KPMG Peat Marwick, where he went on to become one of the youngest partners ever elected. While working in Chicago, he met his wife, Suzanne and they moved to Dallas. It was there that he started his own accounting firm, J. Hoffman & Co., in 1996.
Jay and Suzanne raised their daughters Elizabeth and Kristen in north Dallas where he was an active supporter of their curricular and extracurricular activities. In recent years Jay was delighted to take on the role of Gramps to his four grandchildren.
Jay was a gifted athlete and easily took up a variety of athletic hobbies over the years including golf, biking, martial arts and most recently, tennis. He had a special place in his heart for the family dogs. He enjoyed traveling to visit family in Chicago, where the first stop was always Portillos, for both a Chicago style hot dog and Italian beef. Jay loved being on the water, especially Lake Cypress Springs, Texas, Green Lake, Wisconsin and Lake Tahoe. Jay was quick with a joke and a smile, and his loved ones fondly remember his contagious laughter.
He is survived by his wife Suzanne, his daughters Elizabeth (Bobby Schmeltz) and Kristen (Austin Anderson), his grandchildren Jack, Cooper, Grace and Gus, his brother Scott, his sisters Catherine Miller, Barbara Lundbom (Dave) and Tracy Horosky (Rich), his brother-in-law Harold Stetson (Mary Sue), his mother Judy Mack, stepmother Carol Matzke and mother-in-law Grace Stetson. He also leaves behind over a dozen beloved nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Highland Park United Methodist Church on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jay’s memory can be made to the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas or Dallas Dog Rescue Rehab Reform.
