March 20, 1932 - March 23, 2023
We lost our wonderful mother, Jerry Cheek Bernet, on Thursday, March 23rd, 2023, just three days after her 91st birthday. With the exception of a bout with pneumonia in 1991, she enjoyed excellent health her entire life. The hospital is where she went to have babies.
She was born in Dallas in 1932 and graduated from Highland Park High School in 1950. She never met a stranger and kept up with just about everyone she had ever known. She lived for her family and friends and was on the move from the day she was born until her 90th birthday when congestive heart failure began to slow her down.
When our father, Bob, Sr., died of a sudden brain hemorrhage in 1971, mom went to work full-time in order to support the family. Jobs ranged from receptionist, sales at the T Bar M Racquet Club Pro Shop, and Banquet and Catering at NorthPark Inn.
By the late 1970s she had moved on to the mortgage loan business. In 1979 she relocated to Pebble Beach, California to open a west coast branch of a Dallas mortgage company. She was truly in her element and enjoyed every minute of it. In 1991, she became owner and operator of The Forest Lodge Bed & Breakfast in the heart of Carmel, but by the mid 90s she was getting lonesome for Texas. She returned to Dallas in 1995 and went to work for Lawyer’s Title until she finally retired from work in her early 70s.
She stayed just as busy in retirement as she did at work, but this time she was more relaxed and spent most of her time with family and friends. In 2022, slowing down was not her style, so the action came to her. There was always something going on at her condo. As she tried to recuperate with a new pacemaker and physical therapy, the family continued to gather for Sunday dinners and football games. She remained a huge Cowboy fan no matter the stats.
Time finally ran out and she passed after giving it her all. She outlived her immediate family and most of her close friends, but they are now together again in the arms of Christ at the throne of God. We will miss her terribly, but we also know that we will be with her again.
She leaves behind her two living sons, Bob Bernet, Jr., and Joe Bernet; two grandchildren, Jill and Joy; and a great-grandchild, AJ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Bernet, Sr. and her son Patrick Bernet.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Park Cities Baptist Church in the main sanctuary.
