James Glenn Turner, Jr.

James Glenn Turner, Jr. passed away on Thursday, Oct. 21st, surrounded by his loving family. A Memorial Service will be held at 5:00 p.m on Thursday, Oct. 28th, in the sanctuary at Saint Michael and All Angels Church.

Glenn was born on January 21,1939, in Dallas, Texas, to James Glenn Turner and Sue Reeder Turner. His childhood was filled with fond memories of his time with family at the Circle T Ranch, where his lifelong love of fishing, hunting and all things outdoors began. After graduating from Highland Park High School, he attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a member of the Phi Delt fraternity and became an avid and often “quite boisterous” Longhorn fan. A semester abroad in Vienna, Austria, sparked his interest in world history and led to his “fluency” in the German language, which he continued to entertain his family with over the years.

Glenn married his sweetheart, Cindy Munger, in December of 1961. Soon after, he received his law degree from Southern Methodist University. He then embarked on a successful legal career starting with the firm of Turner, Hitchens, McInerney, Webb and Hartnett. He took particular pride in a case he argued and won in the Texas Supreme Court during his first year of practice. In addition to oil and gas law, he relished opportunities to appear before the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. Glenn continued to enjoy a successful law career for the next 50 years.

”Iron”, as many know him, earned his nickname for his strength and determination, which was so apparent during his long and valiant battle with cancer. Papa found true joy in his faith throughout his lifetime, which grew only stronger through the years. It was an inspiration to witness.

Glenn lived life to the fullest and always with an adventurous spirit. He loved to travel, scuba dive, deep sea fish and even did a solo skydive at the age of 60. He enjoyed many seasons deer hunting in south Texas with friends and family in his vintage Suburban, “Old Blue”. He was passionate about his antique gun collection, sports cars and loved fixing things. He was a craftsman at heart, who enjoyed everything from oil painting to building model airplanes. Glenn had an amazing sense of humor and could always be counted on to light up a room with his hilarious stories.

Papa’s greatest joy was spending time with Cindy, their two daughters and their husbands, five cherished grandchildren and a constant array of pets. All who knew him greatly benefitted from his wisdom, kindness, warmth, integrity and generosity. The love and adoration he had for his soulmate of over 60 years was a beautiful and rare example of true and unconditional love.

Papa was truly our guiding light, our leader and our role model, our mentor, our constant encourager and protector, our champion…our HERO. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. He will live in our hearts forever.

Glenn was a member of Saint Michael and All Angels Church, Dallas Country Club, Brookhollow Golf Club, the Texas Bar Association, Dallas Petroleum Club and the HP Alumni Association. He found meaning in helping others — delivering Meals on Wheels, supporting numerous charitable organizations and constantly paying it forward.

Glenn is survived by his loving wife, Cindy; daughters Lisa Turner Davis and Kay Turner Dozier; their husbands Andrew and Robert; five grandchildren…Turner Davis, Jared Davis, Lauren Davis, Blaine Dozier, Hudson Dozier and his wife Arden; brother Fred E. Turner, Mary Frances Turner, and multiple nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother John Lee Turner and sister Elizabeth Turner Calloway.

Our family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers who provided such love and support for our Papa.
