He was born in Chicago on September 6, 1939 to Norman and Lillian Zimring. His parents and younger sister, Sheila (d. 2015), moved to Dallas when Fred was 12. After graduating from Hillcrest High School in 1957, he attained a degree in mathematics from the University of Texas in 1962 followed by a law degree from SMU Law School in 1965.
Although he was incredibly dedicated to his clients and law practice, he was always ready and willing to step in and try to run the lives of his children and grandchildren. After 50+ years as a lawyer, he only considered himself semi-retired until the end.
Fred was an avid amateur radio operator who held an extra-class license, a pilot, flight instructor, former member of the Civil Air Patrol and a long-time member of the Quiet Birdmen. He enjoyed music and, at various points in his life, played classical violin and bluegrass fiddle.
Fred was survived by Diana, his loving wife of 57 years, children Jeff (Debra), who lives in Albany, New York, and Nathan, who lives in Ft. Worth. He had 5 grandchildren—Victoria “Tori” (Lauren McNaughton), Lilli (Kenan Worden), Zoe, Steven, and Haylea—and two dogs—Einstein and Lego.
A funeral will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home & Hillcrest Mausoleum & Memorial Park, 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX 75225.
